Auburn's Falcon Park will be the site of the 2010 NCAA Div. III Baseball New York Regional

SUNY Cortland has been selected to host the 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball New York Regional at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y., May 19-23.

The schools participating in the double-elimination regional will be announced on Monday, May 17. The regional champion will advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series May 28 – June 1 in Appleton, Wis.

Youths ages 10-18 will have the opportunity to hone their baseball skills at the 22nd annual SUNY Cortland baseball clinic on Sunday, February 28. Two sessions will be conducted -- the first from 9 a.m. to noon and the second from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each session is limited to 85 players. The clinic will be conducted at Cortland's Lusk Field House, located next to the school’s baseball field. The cost per player is $55. High school teams sending six or more players will receive a special rate of $50 per player. This discount must be arranged ahead of time with the Cortland baseball office.

The SUNY Cortland baseball team will be holding a series of hitting and throwing clinic in November, December and January at the Lusk Field House. The clinics are for players ages 10-18. The first clinic will be held on Sunday, Nov. 22, followed by clinics on Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Dec. 13, Dec. 20, Dec. 27, Jan. 3, Jan. 10 and Jan. 17.

Each clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $20. The price to register for all nine sessions is $165. The clinics include hitting stations and throwing drills, with some defensive work provided as well. Cortland head coach Joe Brown will be running the clinics along with his assistant coaches and current players.

Former Cortland relief pitcher J.J. Potrikus has signed a professional contract with the Gary (Ind.) SouthShore RailCats and will join the team for its 2010 Spring Training camp in May.

Potrikus, a native of North Syracuse, N.Y., played two seasons for the Red Dragons from 2008-09 after transferring from Division I Siena College. In two years, he was a combined 4-2 with nine saves, 46 strikeouts and 34 hits allowed in 41 and two-third innings pitched.

Former Cortland outfielder Anthony Coromato finished his first professional season in Italy this past summer and plans on returning in 2010. The Utica Observer-Dispatch spoke with Coromato in September.

SUNY Cortland pitcher Nicolas Blanco (Bronx/St. Raymond’s) has signed a contract to play with the American Defenders of New Hampshire, one of six teams in the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am League). Blanco appeared in his first game for the Defenders, who are located in Nashua, N.H., on August 10.

SUNY Cortland junior pitcher Matt Tone (Rochester/Irondequoit) was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 14th round of the professional baseball draft Wednesday. Tone is the 10th Cortland player to be drafted by a major league baseball team, all since 1994.

Tone came to an agreement with the Twins toward the end of June and will start his professional career with the organization's farm team in Elizabethton, Tenn.

Tone finished 8-0 this past spring with a 3.07 earned run average in 11 appearances, all starts. In 67 and one-third innings, he allowed 64 hits and struck out 84 batters. Tone has a combined record of 21-1 (school-record .955 winning percentage) with a 2.81 ERA through three seasons with the Red Dragons. He ranks third at Cortland with 229 career strikeouts in 176 and one-third innings.

SUNY Cortland junior first baseman Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham), sophomore outfielder Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) and junior pitcher Matt Tone (Rochester/Irondequoit) have all been selected to the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate New York baseball all-star squad.

In addition, Cortland 10th-year head coach Joe Brown has been named the inaugural ECAC Upstate New York Division III Baseball Coach of the Year.
