The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has recognized 156 SUNY Cortland winter and spring sports student-athletes on its All-Academic and Commissioner's List teams for the 2009-10 season.

Athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic LIst by recording at least a 3.3 grade point average during the most recent semester and are chosen to the Commissioner's List if they have at least a cumulative 3.3 grade point average over the past three semesters combined.

03.22 | Women's Basketball
SUNY Cortland senior forward Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) has been honored as one of the nation’s top Division III players during the 2009-10 season with her selection to both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/State Farm and the D3hoops.com All-America teams.

Laing was one of 10 players nationally chosen to the WBCA All-America first team and was a second-team D3hoops.com selection, making her one of the top 10 players receiving recognition from that national Web site. In addition, Laing has been chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Upstate New York Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

SUNY Cortland senior forward Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) has been selected as the 2009-10 D3hoops.com women’s basketball East Region Player of the Year. She was also chosen to the All-East first team for the fourth consecutive season and is now eligible for D3hoops.com All-America honors.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association has tabbed Cortland 12th-year head coach Jeannette Mosher as its East Region Coach of the Year. Mosher, who also was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Coach of the Year this winter, guided the Red Dragons to a 25-4 record, a SUNYAC title and an NCAA tournament appearance.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jodie Luther scored 11 points to lead four Rochester double-figure scorers as the host Yellowjackets defeated Cortland, 66-47, in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs. Rochester (20-6) will face Mary Washington University (Va.) (an 84-53 winner over William Paterson) in the second round Saturday at 7 p.m., while Cortland ends its season with a 25-4 record. The Red Dragons were making their 10th NCAA tournament appearance overall and fourth in five years.

Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) led all players with 20 points and nine rebounds in her final collegiate contest. Sophomore Micki Volpini (Newfield) added seven points and three assists, junior Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) finished with six points and eight rebounds and sophomore Allyson Biordi (Beacon) recorded six points, seven rebounds and four steals.

SUNY Cortland women’s basketball senior forward Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) has been selected as one of 12 national finalists for the prestigious Jostens Trophy. The list of finalists was announced by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., which is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations.

The Jostens Trophy is a national award that honors the most outstanding men’s and women’s Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital components: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. This year’s class marks the 13th year the award has been presented. The men’s and women’s winners will be honored on Thursday, March 18, at the Salem Civic Center.

The SUNY Cortland women’s basketball team has been selected to compete in the 64-team NCAA Division III tournament and will open play against the University of Rochester on Friday, March 5, at Rochester. Game time is 8 p.m.

The other first-round game at Rochester Friday features William Paterson University of New Jersey (25-2) and Mary Washington University of Virginia (21-5) at 6 p.m.. Friday’s winners will play Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Rochester, with that winner advancing to the tournament’s “sweet 16.”

SUNY Cortland senior forward Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) has been named the 2009-10 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and 12th-year head coach Jeannette Mosher has been selected as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches. Laing and Mosher won the same awards last season.

Cortland sophomore guard Micki Volpini (Newfield) joins Laing on the All-SUNYAC first team.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Tournament Most Valuable Player Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Cortland won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women’s basketball tournament with a 51-45 victory over New Paltz.

The Red Dragons (25-3) won their 20th straight game and earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday afternoon. Cortland captured its seventh league tournament title and first since 2007.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, including 17 points and eight rebounds in the second half, as Cortland defeated Geneseo in the SUNYAC women’s basketball tournament semifinals, 64-51.

The top-seeded Red Dragons will be making their 15th appearance in the league championship game and their 10th in the last 12 years. Cortland will face third-seeded New Paltz, an 82-79 winner in four overtimes over second seed Oneonta, for the title Saturday at 4 p.m. New Paltz is making its first SUNYAC championship game showing.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) scored a season-high 30 points while grabbing 12 rebounds as top-seeded Cortland squeezed out a 69-63 victory over #8 seed Fredonia in the SUNYAC women’s basketball tournament quarterfinals.

With the win, Cortland will be the site of both the SUNYAC semifinals and championship game on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27. The Red Dragons (23-3) will play fourth-seeded Geneseo Friday night at 8 p.m., with second-seeded Oneonta and third-seeded New Paltz opening play at 6 p.m.
