The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has recognized 92 SUNY Cortland fall sports student-athletes on its All-Academic and Commissioner's List teams for the 2009 season.

Athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic LIst by recording at least a 3.3 grade point average during the most recent semester and are chosen to the Commissioner's List if they have at least a cumulative 3.3 grade point average over the past three semesters combined. Recipients must be varsity athletes who completed the entire season.

SUNY Cortland defensive ends Evan Wyler (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and Bryan Wiley (Cape Vincent/Thousand Islands) have been selected to the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southeast Football all-star squad.

Five SUNY Cortland players have been selected to the 2009 D3football.com All-East Region team. Senior defensive end Bryan Wiley (Cape Vincent/Thousand Islands) was a first-team selection, senior offensive guard Chris Van De Weert (Goshen) and senior defensive end Evan Wyler (Warwick/Warwick Valley) were second-team choices, and senior wide receiver Eric Hajnos (Grand Island) and sophomore cornerback D.J. Romano (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) were named to the third team.

Cortland senior punter Kyle Peterson (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) has been chosen to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine College Division District I All-Academic Football First Team. The team includes Division II and III schools from New York and New England and is chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Peterson was eligible for Academic All-America honors by virtue of his first-team all-district selection, but he was not chosen to the national team.

SUNY Cortland sophomore cornerback D.J. Romano (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 22.

Romano made a team-high 11 tackles, seven solo, in Cortland’s 34-20 loss at St. John Fisher in the ECAC Division III Northwest Bowl. Romano also led the Red Dragons with three pass breakups.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tim Bailey completed 24-of-41 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 70 yards and a score as host St. John Fisher defeated Cortland, 34-20, in the ECAC Div. III Northwest Bowl. The Cardinals complete the season at 7-3 and Cortland finishes the year at 7-4. The Red Dragons were making their 15th postseason appearance and seventh in eight years.

SUNY Cortland senior defensive end Bryan Wiley (Cape Vincent/Thousand Islands) has been selected as the 2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) football Defensive Player of the Year. Wiley is also one of 10 Red Dragons to be named to the all-conference team – four on the first team, four on the second team and two honorable mention.

Wiley recorded 69 tackles, including 10 sacks and 17 total tackles for lost yardage, in 10 regular season games. He also registered two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, a pass breakup and nine quarterback hurries. Wiley made 15 tackles in a victory over Rowan and 12 tackles in a loss at league champion Montclair State.

SUNY Cortland has been selected to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northwest football bowl game and will travel to St. John Fisher College on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m.

Cortland, led by 13th-year head coach Dan MacNeill, finished the regular season 7-3 and placed third out of 10 teams in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings with a 7-2 record. Cortland is making its 15th postseason appearance overall and seventh in the last eight years. The Red Dragons have appeared in the NCAA playoffs six times, including a run to the national quarterfinals in 2008, and are 5-3 in eight previous ECAC showings.
