Women's lacrosse action shot
11.20 | Women's Lacrosse
The SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team will be holding its winter clinic on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lusk Field House on campus. The clinic, conducted by Cortland head coach Kathy Taylor, assistant coach Chelsea Strodel and the Cortland players, is open to players ages 14-18, and high school seniors are welcome.

Three members of the SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team have earned Division III All-America honors for the 2009 season. Senior attacker Danielle Torre (Massapequa) was named a first team All-American and both freshman midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) and senior defender Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern) were chosen as second team All-Americans by both the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and the web site womenslacrosse.com.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Alison Jaeger led six College of New Jersey multiple-goal scorers with four goals as the nationally fourth-ranked Lions defeated 16th-ranked Cortland, 17-7, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) and senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored three goals each for Cortland, which finishes the season with a 14-7 record. The Red Dragons were making their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, and advanced to at least the second round each of those years.

SUNY Cortland senior attacker Danielle Torre (Massapequa) has been named the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year.

Torre is one of five Red Dragons on the all-league team. Joining her on the first team are freshman midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central), junior midfielder Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and senior defender Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern). Senior defender Anna Fahey (Syracuse/West Genesee) was selected to the second team.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than six minutes into the game and tallied the first eight goals of the second half and went on to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps of California, 23-8, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. With the win, the Red Dragons advanced to the second round and face The College of New Jersey on Saturday, May 9, while the Athenas had their season end at 12-2.

Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists for Cortland and became the first player in school history to surpass 100 points in a single season. Torre now has 105 points on a school-record 77 goals and 28 assists.

The SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round game on Wednesday, May 6, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The winner will play at The College of New Jersey as part of a four-team regional on Saturday, May 9, and will face the host Lions in a second-round game at 11:30 a.m.

Under first-year head coach Kathy Taylor, the Red Dragons (13-6) earned their playoff berth after capturing their 11th straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title. Cortland won the league title with an 11-8 win at Buffalo State in last Saturday's championship game and will be making its 11th straight NCAA appearance and 12th overall.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored five goals as the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated 18th-ranked Buffalo St., 11-8, in the finals of the SUNYAC Tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 13-6 on the season and earned their 11th consecutive conference crown and NCAA berth. The Bengals had their 16-game winning streak snapped and fell to 16-2 and await a possible at-large NCAA playoff berth.

Cortland, the second seed in the tournament, improved to 12-6 overall with the victory, and third-seeded Oneonta fell to 10-6. The Red Dragons advanced to meet top-seeded Buffalo St., a 19-9 winner versus fourth-seeded Geneseo in the first semifinal.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored four goals and added three assists, becoming the 20th Red Dragons to eclipse 100 career goals, as the Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Potsdam, 15-6, in the final regular-season game for both teams. The Red Dragons improved to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fell to 7-8 and 2-7. Cortland faces Oneonta on Friday in a conference semifinal game at Buffalo St.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo St. scored the game's final four goals and rallied for a 14-12 win versus nationally 15th-ranked Cortland in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fell to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals earned their first-ever win against the Red Dragons and improved to 14-1 and 8-0. Buffalo St. also clinched the regular-season conference crown with the victory and will host the four-team league playoff next Friday and Saturday. Despite the setback, Cortland earned the second seed in the tournament.
