The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has recognized 156 SUNY Cortland winter and spring sports student-athletes on its All-Academic and Commissioner's List teams for the 2009-10 season.

Athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic LIst by recording at least a 3.3 grade point average during the most recent semester and are chosen to the Commissioner's List if they have at least a cumulative 3.3 grade point average over the past three semesters combined.

SUNY Cortland senior Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) has been chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Div. III Softball PItcher of the Year for the second straight year, while junior second baseman Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) has been named the ECAC Upstate Player of the Year.

In addition to Finch and Cross being on the All-ECAC first team, sophomore outfielder Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) was chosen to the All-ECAC second team.

SUNY Cortland junior second baseman Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and senior pitcher Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) have been chosen to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-America Team.

Cross was selected to the All-America first team for the second straight season. Finch was named to the All-America second team for the second year in a row, and graduates as a three-time All-American. She was a third-team honoree as a sophomore in 2008.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Meghan Donoghue led off with a triple and scored on a one-out wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning as nationally 21st-ranked Lebanon Valley College defeated sixth-ranked Cortland, 1-0, in an elimination game at the NCAA Div. III softball regional hosted by Ithaca College.

Cortland, which avoided elimination earlier in the day with a 7-3 win over Polytechnic Institute of New York University, finishes the season with a 40-8 record. The Red Dragons reached the 40-win mark for the second straight year and the third time in school history. Cortland was making its fourth straight NCAA playoff appearance and 16th overall.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Alfred University’s Chelsey Cary threw a four-hitter as the fourth-seeded Saxons defeated top-seeded Cortland, 3-1, during the second day of the NCAA Div. III Softball Regional at Ithaca College.

The Saxons (36-6) advance to the winner’s bracket finals Saturday at 2 p.m. versus Ithaca College. Cortland (39-7) will play Saturday at 10 a.m. versus Polytechnic Institute of New York University in an elimination contest. The winner of that game will play again on Saturday at 4 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. Cortland now needs to win five straight games to win the regional title and make its third straight Div. III World Series appearance.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) threw a two-hitter and became the 11th player in NCAA Div. III history to surpass the career 1,000-strikeout mark as top-seeded Cortland defeated eighth-seeded Keuka College, 7-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III regionals at Ithaca College. Cortland (39-6), ranked sixth nationally, will face fourth-seeded Alfred University in a winner’s bracket semifinal game Friday at 2 p.m.

Finch struck out nine batters and did not allow a hit after the first inning as she improved to 26-2 on the season. Her fifth strikeout of the game, in the top of the third inning, was the 1,000th of her career. Her current total is 1,004.

The SUNY Cortland softball team has earned a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth straight year and will be the top seed in an eight-team, double-elimination regional Thursday through Monday, May 13-17, at Ithaca College’s Kostrinsky Field.

The Red Dragons (38-6) earned an automatic berth into the national tournament after winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament in Cortland last weekend. Cortland will play Thursday at 10 a.m. versus eighth-seeded Keuka College (23-8). Other first-day matchups include fourth-seeded Alfred University (34-6) versus fifth-seeded King’s College (Pa.) (22-16) at noon, third-seeded Lebanon Valley College (Pa.) (31-11) versus sixth-seeded Polytechnic Institute of New York University (31-9) at 2 p.m., and second-seeded Ithaca College (30-13) versus seventh-seeded Dickinson College (Pa.) (19-17) at 4 p.m.

SUNY Cortland senior pitcher Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) and junior second baseman Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) have been honored as the top players in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) softball for the 2010 season. Finch has been named the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year for the third straight season. Cross is the league’s Player of the Year after sharing that honor as a sophomore.

In addition, Cortland’s 16th-year head coach Julie Lenhart has been chosen as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time after guiding the Red Dragons to an 18-0 regular-season league mark and a 4-0 record to win the SUNYAC tournament crown. Finch and Cross are joined by senior first baseman Emily Ringen (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock), freshman outfielder Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore outfielder Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) on the All-SUNYAC first team.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Tournament MVP Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) threw a one-hit shutout and sophomore Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) singled in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as nationally seventh-ranked Cortland defeated Plattsburgh, 1-0, to win the SUNYAC title.

The Red Dragons (38-6) won their 10th SUNYAC title and third in four years. Cortland earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III tournament and will be making its seventh national showing in eight years.

Cortland senior pitcher Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) has been chosen to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine College Division District I All-Academic Softball second team.

The team, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), encompasses Division II and III schools from New York and New England. Finch is a physical education major with a cumulative 3.30 grade point average, prior to this past spring semester. She earned third team academic all-district honors during her sophomore season.
