NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s tennis finished in second place out of eight schools at the New Paltz Women’s Tennis Tournament. The Red Dragons went 3-0 in pool play before losing, 5-2, to New Paltz in the championship match.

In pool play, Cortland defeated Brockport, 7-0, Western Connecticut St., 6-1, and Hunter, 5-2. New Paltz finished 3-0 in its pool with victories over Mt. St. Mary, St. Thomas Aquinas and Plattsburgh.

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Cortland won all six singles matches in straight sets and captured three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-4 as the Red Dragons defeated host St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0, in a dual match.

In doubles play, sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) and freshman Kara Caulfield (West Islip/Sayville) won 8-1 on the first flight and freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) were 8-1 winners on the second flight. Sophomore Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and sophomore Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) won 8-2 at third doubles.

GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests to defeat visiting Cortland, 8-1, in a dual match.

Cortland’s lone victory came at third singles, where sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Shari Damon. The Red Dragons also lost a tight match at second doubles when freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) fell 9-8 to Remy Raevsky and Katie Serock.

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has recognized 92 SUNY Cortland fall sports student-athletes on its All-Academic and Commissioner's List teams for the 2009 season.

Athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic LIst by recording at least a 3.3 grade point average during the most recent semester and are chosen to the Commissioner's List if they have at least a cumulative 3.3 grade point average over the past three semesters combined.

MANLIUS, N.Y. – Sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) won the individual title at fourth singles and sophomore Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) earned runner-up honors at second singles to highlight Cortland’s performances at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Tennis Championships. The three-day tournament was conducted at the Eastside Racquet Club.

Cortland finished fourth out of eight schools in the final team standings with 16 points. Geneseo repeated as league champion and earned the conference’s NCAA automatic berth with 46 points, followed by New Paltz (24), Oneonta (20), Cortland, Oswego (8), Plattsburgh (6), Brockport (4) and Fredonia (2).

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) rallied for a three-set victory at sixth singles to snap a 4-4 tie and Cortland defeated visiting RIT, 5-4, in a non-league dual match. The Red Dragons improve to 8-4 with the victory, while the Tigers are now 5-4.

CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence won two of three closely contested doubles matches and held on to defeat Cortland, 5-4, in a non-league dual match. The Saints are 2-0 in dual action this fall while Cortland is 7-4. The Red Dragons’ scheduled match Saturday at Plattsburgh has been postponed due to forecasted poor weather.

GENEVA, N.Y. - Cortland freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) won three matches before eventually losing in the semifinals in the singles consolation bracket at the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted Friday through Sunday at William Smith College.

AURORA, N.Y. – Cortland players lost only a combined five games in a convincing 9-0 non-league victory at Wells College. The Red Dragons (7-3) won the three doubles matches by 8-2 scores or better, and lost just one game in two of 12 singles sets.

Sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and combined with sophomore Kristina Lazzaro (Williamsville/Williamsville East) to win 8-1 at first doubles. Sophomore Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles and teamed with sophomore Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) to earn an 8-0 victory at second doubles.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) won in straight sets at first singles for the decisive point as Cortland edged Oneonta, 5-4, in a SUNYAC dual match. The host Red Dragons improved to 6-3 with the win and Oneonta falls to 5-3. Both teams are now 4-2 in SUNYAC play.
