SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five Cortland athletes qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships during the Red Dragons’ competition at the Syracuse University Invitational.
Freshman Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) placed third in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.81 seconds and freshman Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) finished seventh in the 800 meters in 2:21.33. In addition, three Red Dragons posted ECAC qualifying times in the 3,000-meter run. Senior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) finished fifth (10:27.13), junior Kristin Vespa (Ossining) was 10th (10:45.28) and sophomore Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) finished 11th (10:49.32).
01.30 | Women's Track and Field
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior Nicole Ragard (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley), junior Barbara Green (Levittown/Division Avenue) and junior Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) each recorded top-10 finishes during Cortland’s competition at the Colgate University Class of ’32 Invitational. A total of 16 schools, including two Division I teams, attended the meet.
Ragard tied for third place in the pole vault by clearing 9’6”, with Wignall 10th in the event at 9’ 0”. Green finished eighth in the 800 meters in 2:27.54.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland turned in 14 top-10 finishes at the Upstate Challenge, hosted by Cornell University. The meet featured four Div. I schools (Cornell, Buffalo, Colgate and Binghamton) along with Cortland and Ithaca.
The 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy), senior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough), freshman Jordan Naylon (Fairport) and sophomore Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships with its fifth-place time of 10:10.98. The same quartet also competed in the 4x400-meter relay and finished sixth in 4:29.72.

Information for the 2010 Red Dragon Track and Field Clinic, which will be held on Sunday, March 28, is now available online. The information packet, which is accessible as both a PDF and a Word file, includes general information, the clinic schedule, anticipated clinicians and a registration form.
The clinic cost is $25 per athlete or coach for advanced registration (postmarked by March 19), or $30 per athlete or coach for registration at the clinic. A $5 discount per athlete or coach is available for schools bringing five or more individuals.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) finished second in the 55-meter hurdles to lead Cortland’s competitors at the Syracuse University Welcome Back Meet.
Darling’s runner-up time of 8.91 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles is an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying time. Cortland also received ECAC-qualifying efforts from senior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) and sophomore Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), who finished fourth (10:40.44) and fifth (10:42.60), respectively, in the 3,000 meters, and freshman Nikki Schafer, who finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.09 seconds (9.01 in prelims).

SUNY Cortland freshman Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) has been chosen as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 13.
Schafer won the 55-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.81 seconds (8.72 in prelims) at the St. Lawrence Holiday Relays last Saturday. She also finished fourth in the high jump (1.48 meters - 4' 10.25") and was part of a second-place 4x200-meter relay team that qualified for ECACs in 1:50.34.

CANTON, N.Y. – Five Cortland athletes won individual events and the Red Dragons posted numerous top-five finishes at the non-team scoring St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays.
Freshman Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.81 seconds (8.72 in prelims) and qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships. She also placed fourth in the high jump at 1.48 meters (4’ 10.25”). Freshman Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse)won the long jump at 4.91 meters (16’ 1.5”) and was third in the triple jump at 10.15 meters (33’ 3.75”).

MARIETTA, OHIO - Cortland junior Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) earned All-America honors in the high jump for the second straight season with a tie for third place in the event at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Marietta College.
Serikstad cleared 5' 5.75" - one of four competitors finish at that height. The winner, Ashley Huston of Hardin-Simmons, cleared 5' 7", as did the runner-up. Serikstad and Richard Stockton's Lisa Shepherd tied for third place after each of them finished at 5' 5.75" with four total misses, with no misses at their final successful height. Two others tied for fifth after clearing 5' 5.75", but each on their second attempt. A total of 25 athletes competed, with the top eight earning All-America honors.

MARIETTA, OHIO - Cortland senior Sarah Kimball (Liverpool) finished in 10th place out of 19 competitors in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College.
Kimball's best height was 11' 10.5". She missed All-America honors by two places. Rachel Secrest of North Central College won the event at 13' 2.25". Kimball was making the second NCAA appearance of her career. She tied for 16th place at last year's outdoor national meet in Wisconsin.
