The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has recognized 156 SUNY Cortland winter and spring sports student-athletes on its All-Academic and Commissioner's List teams for the 2009-10 season.

Athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic LIst by recording at least a 3.3 grade point average during the most recent semester and are chosen to the Commissioner's List if they have at least a cumulative 3.3 grade point average over the past three semesters combined.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Cortland junior Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale) posted a 2-1 record on Saturday to place fourth at 133 pounds at the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships. Senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) dropped a pair of bouts but still finished eighth at 197 pounds. Both Sterling and Sottile earned All-America honors with their finishes.

Cortland finished in 22nd place in the final team standings with 18.5 points. The Red Dragons have placed in the top 25 nationally eight times in the last nine seasons.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Cortland senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) and junior Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale) are each guaranteed All-America honors after their performances on the opening day of competition at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

Sottile, at 197 pounds, and Sterling, at 133 pounds, won their opening matches before losing in the quarterfinals. They then won their first match in the consolation bracket to clinch a top-eight finish and All-America recognition. Each wrestler can finish as high as third place when the competition resumes Saturday.

Official seedings and brackets have been posted on the 2010 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships web site. Two of Cortland's four wrestlers have earned seeds. Senior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) is the seventh seed at 174 pounds and faces Seth Rehn of Coe in his opening bout. Senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood), who opens with Connor McNamara of Ursinus, is seeded eighth at 197 pounds.

Junior Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale) faces second-seeded Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central in his opening bout at 133 pounds, while senior heavyweight Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) takes on fifth-seeded John Helgerson of Wartburg in his first bout.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Three wrestlers won conference titles and all 10 entries finished in the top four of their weight classes to lead Cortland to the team crown at the nine-team Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships, hosted by RIT.

Cortland won its fourth league title overall and third in four years. The Red Dragons finished first previously in 1999 and 2007 and was co-champion in 2008. Seniors Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon), Martino Sottile (Brentwood) and Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) won individual titles to automatically qualify for the NCAA Div. III Championships March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Murphy also became the fifth wrestler in Cortland history to reach the 100-career win mark. Junior Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale) finished second at 133 pounds and was one of five “wild card” selections to the NCAA Div. III Championships in a vote of the league’s coaches.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland wrestling team completed its 2009-10 dual-meet season with a 24-12 loss at fourth-ranked Ithaca College. The Red Dragons finish with a 16-4 record and Ithaca is 20-1.

Both teams will compete at the nine-team Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 20, at RIT. The 10 league weight-class champions and five wild cards will qualify for the NCAA Div. III Championships.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior heavyweight Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) posted a 3-1 victory in the final match to break a 16-16 team tie and the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland wrestling squad defeated host Stevens Institute of Technology, 19-16, in dual-match action.

Cortland is 16-3 on the season, one win shy of the school record for wins set during a 17-3 season in 1995-96. Four other Red Dragon teams have won 16 matches, most recently the 2006-07 squad that was 16-3. Cortland completes its dual-match season on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at nationally fourth-ranked Ithaca.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland won three of the final four matches to pull away for a 25-12 win over host SUNY Oswego in a dual match at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The nationally 14th-ranked Red Dragons improve to 15-3 with the win and the Lakers are now 3-9.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Three Cortland wrestlers won weight-class titles as the Red Dragons competed at the Jamestown Open at Jamestown Community College. Junior Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won at 157 pounds, freshman Jon Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) was the 165-pound champion and senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) finished first at 197 pounds.
