HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior heavyweight Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) posted a 3-1 victory in the final match to break a 16-16 team tie and the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland wrestling squad defeated host Stevens Institute of Technology, 19-16, in dual-match action.
Cortland is 16-3 on the season, one win shy of the school record for wins set during a 17-3 season in 1995-96. Four other Red Dragon teams have won 16 matches, most recently the 2006-07 squad that was 16-3. Cortland completes its dual-match season on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at nationally fourth-ranked Ithaca.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland won three of the final four matches to pull away for a 25-12 win over host SUNY Oswego in a dual match at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The nationally 14th-ranked Red Dragons improve to 15-3 with the win and the Lakers are now 3-9.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Three Cortland wrestlers won weight-class titles as the Red Dragons competed at the Jamestown Open at Jamestown Community College. Junior Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won at 157 pounds, freshman Jon Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) was the 165-pound champion and senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) finished first at 197 pounds.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Delaware Valley, ranked fifth nationally in Division III, won seven of 10 matches, including a pin and a forfeit win, and the Aggies defeated 14th-ranked Cortland, 27-12, in Cortland's final home dual match of the season. Delaware Valley is now 9-2 with the win and the Red Dragons slip to 14-3.

Cortland senior heavyweight Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) has been named the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Co-Wrestler of the Week for the week ending Jan. 24. He shares the award with Ithaca College’s Jeremy Stierly.
Murphy finished in third place in his weight class at the all-division New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships last weekend at Cornell University. He posted a 3-1 record, with his lone loss a 3-2 decision to the second seed from Cornell in the semifinals. Earlier in the week, Murphy earned a 9-2 decision in Cortland’s 26-12 home dual victory over Oneonta.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Behind seven all-state performances, the Cortland wrestling team finished in sixth place out of 18 schools at the all-division New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships, hosted by Cornell University.
The Red Dragons were the second-highest Division III team in the final standings with 78.5 points. Cornell won the title with 194 points, followed by Army (158), Buffalo (149.5), Binghamton (143.5), Ithaca (106), Cortland, Oneonta (57) and Brockport (52) in the top eight.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won seven matches, including pins by junior Jared Lemke (Alden) and senior Kevin Sackett (Webster/Webster Thomas), and the nationally 15th-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Oneonta, 26-12. Cortland is 14-2 and Oneonta falls to 8-6 in dual action this season.
Lemke won the night’s first match at 125 pounds with his pin in overtime versus Zachary Cogen (Bellmore/Bellmore JFK). The wrestlers were tied 1-1 entering the one-minute sudden-victory extra session. Lemke recorded the pin 26 seconds into the overtime and is now 19-8 on the season. Sackett upped his record to 20-8 with his pin in 4:52 at 157 pounds. He leads Cortland this winter with nine pins.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – Cortland finished third out of 20 teams at the Budd Whitehill Div. III Duals at Lycoming College. The Red Dragons, ranked 15th nationally, were edged by seventh-ranked The College of New Jersey, 18-16, but bounced back to defeat 16th-ranked Wilkes, 24-12, in the third-place match. Cortland went 4-1 at the tournament and is 13-2 on the season.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland wrestling team won three matches to advance to the semifinals of the 20-team Budd Whitehill Div. III Duals, hosted by Lycoming College. The Red Dragons defeated Case Western Reserve, 44-6, King’s College of Pennsylvania, 28-6, and 28th-ranked Springfield College, 19-12.
Cortland (12-1), the tournament’s third seed, will face second-seeded and nationally seventh-ranked The College of New Jersey Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Red Dragons will then compete against either fourth-ranked Ithaca or 16th-ranked Wilkes in either the championship match or the third-place match at 3 p.m.
