SUNY Cortland director of athletics Joan Sitterly and former women's lacrosse head coach and current field hockey head coach
Cynthia Wetmore have been chosen as two of the newest inductees into the US Lacrosse Upstate New York Chapter Hall of Fame.
The two will be among those inducted during a black-tie optional dinner and ceremony Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse. Any friends, family or colleagues who wish to attend the dinner can do so by sending a check for $45 per person to Tom Hall, 315 Center St., Fayetteville, NY 13066 by Oct. 10.
Sitterly has been one of the nation's top women's lacrosse officials for 34 years. A national and international official, she has worked national championship games on the NCAA Division I, II and III levels as well as numerous national semifinal and quarterfinal contests. In addition, Sitterly has assigned officials for colleges and high schools in most of New York State for many years and has trained hundreds of officials both in the state and throughout the country.
Sitterly has served as Cortland's director of athletics on a full-time basis since 2004 in addition to two prior stints in an interim capacity. The 1974 SUNY Brockport alumna was also one of the nation's most successful women's volleyball coaches, guiding the Red Dragons to 816 wins from 1983-2004. She was the second volleyball coach in Division III women's history to reach 800 career wins.
Wetmore coached Cortland's women's lacrosse team from 1998 to 2007 and is the program's career victory leader with an overall record of 146-37. She led the Red Dragons to nine State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) titles and nine NCAA Division III playoff appearances. A three-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year, Wetmore's 2006 squad finished 19-1 and advanced to the NCAA Division III “final four” for the first time in school history. Three of her other teams advanced to the national quarterfinals.
Wetmore came to Cortland after a highly successful run as the head lacrosse and field hockey coach at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Her lacrosse teams had a combined record of 152-14-1 from 1986-97 and claimed the first-ever New York State Class A Championships in 1995 and 1996. The Northstars were 1997 New York State finalists. She was named Section III Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and Syracuse Herald American Coach of the Year in 1997.
The 1982 University of Rhode Island alumna is currently in her 11th season as Cortland's field hockey head coach. Her teams are a combined 156-39, prior to this season, with nine NCAA appearances and three “final four” showings, including a national title in 2001.
