CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior
Mike Jock's (Altona/Beekmantown) first-half goal held up and the Cortland men's soccer team defeated Oswego, 1-0, Wednesday night in SUNYAC action. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 8-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference and earned one of the six league playoff berths. The Lakers fell to 7-8 and 5-4.
The game was played primarily in the midfield for most of the first half before Jock's third goal of the season. The Red Dragons earned a corner kick and the ball was sent into the box where freshman Luke Wear (Vista/John Jay-Cross River) attempted to control the ball but it glanced off his head and toward the top of the box. Jock ran onto the ball and deposited a one-time 20-yard shot past Oswego sophomore goalie Matt Wopperer (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) in the 37th minute.
A few minutes later, the teams traded chances. In the 42nd minute, Oswego junior Mike Kinkaid (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Afnorth) forced a turnover, carried into the left side of the box but slid a shot wide right. Less than a minute later, Cortland senior
Dave Jacques (Warwick/Don Bosco Prep) unleashed a hard shot that Wopperer stopped.
The Red Dragons had an opportunity to make it a 2-0 game in the 70th minute, but Wopperer denied senior
Bryan Patterson's (Farmingdale) bid in front. The Lakers pressed late in the game and their best chance to tie the game was on a header by senior Mike Roorda (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) right in front that Cortland senior goalie
Steve Axtell (Franklin/Sidney) just deflected over the crossbar with his fingertips.
Axtell finished the game with three saves, all in the second half, while Wopperer stopped six shots, including five in the second half.
