Cortland won its first NCAA title and finished in the top four nationally for the third consecutive year
HANOVER, IND. - The SUNY Cortland men's cross country team won its first NCAA Division III title, outdistancing the 32-team field at Hanover College. The Red Dragons placed all seven of their runners, including the five scorers, in the top 75 and finished with 80 points. North Central of Illinois was second with 115 points and Williams College finished third with 129 points.
Four Cortland runners earned All-America honors with top-35 finishes over the 8,000-meter course. Junior Seth DuBois (Altamont/Guilderland) was seventh in 24:38.73, senior Shamus Nally (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished 11th in 24:46.67, senior Josh Henry (Truxton/Homer) was 15th in 24:48.21 and junior Justin Wager (Guilderland) placed 28th in 24:57.47.
Nally earned All-America honors for the third straight year. He finished eighth nationally last year and ninth in 2006. DuBois repeated as an All-American after placing 19th last season.
Junior Kyle O'Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury)Â finished 61st (25:18.78), sophomore Stephen Scrafford (Cooperstown)Â was 65th (25:21.08) and junior Jerry Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley)Â finished 73rd (25:25.98). Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College won the individual title in 24:22.03.
Nally, DuBois, Henry and Wager were the top four runners at the 1,600-meter point in the race. They were also among the lead pack about 2,500 meters into the race. At the 5,600-meter checkpoint, DuBois was fifth, Nally 10th, Henry 14th and Wager 17th, and DuBois was still in the top five with about 1,500 meters left before eventually placing seventh.
Cortland finished in the top four nationally for the third straight year. The Red Dragons were fourth in 2006 and third at last year's championship race.
The SUNY Cortland Athletic program has now won 22 national team titles, including 16 NCAA crowns in seven different sports (men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, women's soccer, men's lacrosse, women's indoor track and field, and women's outdoor track and field).
