CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fourteen different players scored goals, including two close defenders, as the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-3 victory versus Oneonta Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The host Red Dragons improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC, while the visiting Red Dragons fell to 3-7 and 0-3.
Senior
Kyle Simensky (Locust Valley) led the Cortland offense with four goals and two assists. Senior
Billy Fuchs (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) scored three goals, sophomore
Neal Hopps (Akwasasne/Massena) registered the first points of his career with two goals and an assist, and senior
Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) and freshman
Chris DeLuca (Sayville) each notched a pair of goals.
Senior
Josh Cittadino (Baldwin) chipped in with a goal and three assists, eight ground balls and won 10-of-12 faceoffs. Senior
J.R. Gaudet (Binghamton) won 8-of-8 faceoffs and Deluca went 7-for-9. Freshman
Pete Morgan (Putnam Valley) scored his first career points with a goal and an assist, and his older brother
Joey Morgan (Putnam) also added a goal and an assist. Junior close defenders
Matt Noble (La Fayette) and
Luke Lemon (Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy) each scored his first career goal. All four of Cortland's goalkeepers saw action in the game. Junior
Mike Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) earned the win, making five saves in 39 minutes, 23 seconds. Junior
Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) and freshman
Tom Holden (Corning/Corning East) did not need to make a save, and freshman
Mike Diamond (Farmingdale) stopped three shots in his first collegiate action.
Seniors Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst) and Kevin Gregory (Baldwin) and freshman Tom Kelly (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) scored one goal apiece for Oneonta. Freshman Scott Kellman (Suffern) collected an assist. Senior goalie Kyle Reich (New Hyde Park/Great Neck South) made 18 saves through three quarters, and junior Nick Murray (West Babylon) registered six saves in the fourth quarter.
Cortland jumped out a 7-0 first-quarter lead with three of the goals coming from Fuchs before Bopp netted Oneonta's first goal at the 1:31 mark of the opening quarter. The host Red Dragons stretched their lead to 14-3 at halftime and outscored Oneonta 8-0 over the final two quarters as the Cortland bench emptied in the second half.
Cortland outshot Oneonta, 73-18, in the game, had a 64-29 advantage in ground balls and won 25-of-29 faceoffs. Cortland went 1-for-3 on man-up situations and scored a man-down goal, while Oneonta was 0-3 with the man advantage. The host Red Dragons have now outscored their opponents, 96-22, during their current five-game winning streak.
