Mike Ciaburri pinned his opponent at 174 pounds for his 24th victory of the season
ONEONTA, N.Y. - Cortland won seven out of 10 matches, two by pin, and the nationally 17th-ranked Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 30-15, in a dual-match between Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference foes. Cortland improves to 8-6 with the victory, while the host Red Dragons are now 6-8-1.
Cortland took a 14-0 lead after three matches. Senior Peppy Cabrera (Brentwood) won by a 21-5 technical fall in 6:09 at 125 pounds, followed by a pin from sophomore Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale) in 5:43 at 133 pounds and a 4-3 victory by sophomore Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) at 141 pounds. Cabrera is now 15-3, Sterling is 21-9 and Perez is 22-6 on the season.
Following an Oneonta win at 149 pounds, Cortland claimed the next three bouts to take a 26-3 lead and clinch the team victory. Sophomore Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won by a 10-5 decision at 157 pounds, junior Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota) was a 5-0 victor at 165 pounds and junior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) pinned his opponent in 5:41 at 174 pounds. Ciaburri has a 24-14 record this winter.
Oneonta picked up pins at 184 and 197 pounds. Cortland junior heavyweight Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) closed the match with a 10-2 major decision for his team-high 27th victory of the year.
Cortland returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28, when it hosts Oswego at 7 p.m. for its first home match of the season.
