MANLIUS, N.Y. – Sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) won the individual title at fourth singles and sophomore Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) earned runner-up honors at second singles to highlight Cortland’s performances at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Tennis Championships.

The three-day tournament was conducted at the Eastside Racquet Club. Tretter earns first team All-SUNYAC honors and DiCapua is a second team All-SUNYAC honoree by virtue of their finishes.

Cortland finished fourth out of eight schools in the final team standings with 16 points. Geneseo repeated as league champion and earned the conference’s NCAA automatic berth with 46 points, followed by New Paltz (24), Oneonta (20), Cortland, Oswego (8), Plattsburgh (6), Brockport (4) and Fredonia (2).

Tretter, seeded second at fourth singles, opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brockport on Saturday, followed later that day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Oneonta in the semifinals. She earned the title Sunday with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over top seed Anna Lehet of Geneseo. DiCapua entered as the top seed at second singles. She posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Plattsburgh in the quarterfinals and a 7-6, 6-1 win versus Oneonta in the semifinals, including a 7-1 win in the first-set tiebreaker. In Sunday’s finals, she went to three sets before losing to second-seeded Montana Wilson of New Paltz. DiCapua won the first set, 6-1, before Wilson came back to win the next two sets, 6-1 and 6-4.

All three of Cortland’s doubles teams advanced to the semifinals, with two of them being within a close tiebreaker of making the finals. At first doubles, Tretter and DiCapua won 6-4, 6-2 over Oswego in Friday’s quarterfinals. On Saturday, they won the first set versus Oneonta, 6-2, but lost 7-6 in the second set after an 8-6 tiebreaker and fell 6-3 in the third set.

At third doubles, sophomore Kristina Lazzaro (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and sophomore Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win versus Fredonia. In the semifinals versus second-seeded Oneonta, they lost 6-3 in the first set and won 6-3 in the second set. The third set, however, went to Oneonta, 7-6, also after an 8-6 tiebreaker. Freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) won 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals versus Plattsburgh at second doubles, but lost to the top seed from Geneseo in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1.

Cortland’s other four singles entries were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Jelinek won her opening set at first singles versus the second seed from Oneonta, 6-2, before dropping tight 7-5 decisions in each of the next two sets. Medina fell 6-3, 6-3 to the second seed from New Paltz at third singles, Sullivan lost 7-5, 6-3 to Plattsburgh at fifth singles and sophomore Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) lost 6-1, 6-1 to the second seed from Oneonta at sixth singles.
