CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals and defeated Geneseo, 2-0, in SUNYAC action Friday night at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 4-7-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference with the win, while the Knights fell to 7-4-1 and 4-2.
For Cortland, sophomore
Lukas Wear (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) and senior
Harald Gracholski (Memel, Germany/Hermano Zudermano) each scored a goal, and juniors
Steve Bartkowski (Buffalo/Kenmore East) and
Andrew Schwert (Buffalo/West Seneca East) collected one assist apiece. Graduate student
Steve Axtell (Franklin/Sidney) made six saves in goal, including several key stops in the second half.
Junior goalie Mike Madarasz (Smithtown/Smithtown West) registered two saves for the Knights.
The Red Dragons had the best chance in the first half, but Madarasz made a save on Wear's header off a long free kick from junior
Patrick Meany (Delmar/Bethlehem).
The action picked up in the second half, and Geneseo senior Jason Tartick (East Amherst/Williamsville East) nearly broke the deadlock in the 54th minute but his shot at an open goal went wide. Three minutes later, Wear gave Cortland a 1-0 lead when he knocked a rebound past Madarasz after Bartkowski's original shot was blocked in front on a corner kick. Geneseo pressured after the goal and had several outstanding opportunities, including a shot by senior Kurt Jameson (Pittsford/Mendon) that Axtell saved and Schwert alertly cleared off the goal line as two Geneseo players made bids for the ball.
Cortland netted a big insurance goal on a quick conterattack in the 84th minute. Schwert fed a ball to Gracholski, who cut across the box from the left to the right and curled a booming 20-yard right-footed shot inside the right post for his team-high eighth goal of the season.
