Red Dragons Fall at Home to Brockport, 2-1

Senior Harald Gracholski scored his team-high ninth goal of the season
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Brockport men's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 win over Cortland Saturday night in SUNYAC action at the SUNYAC Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons fell to 4-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference with the setback, and the Golden Eagles improved to 6-4-2 and 5-2.

Senior Harald Gracholski (Memel, Germany/Hermano Zudermano) scored his team-high ninth goal for Cortland, and senior Mark Gunsch (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) and junior Andrew Schwert (Buffalo/West Seneca East) each recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Erik Shum (Carmel/Kennedy) registered three saves, all in the second half.

Sophomore Troy Parker (Watertown) and junior Mike Breman (Merrick/Bellmore-JFK) scored one goal apiece for the Golden Eagles. Senior Steve Abgarian (Merrick/Bellmore-JFK) and freshman Marc Orlando (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) each chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Joe Marino (Rochester/McQuaid) stopped one shot.

The Golden Eagles struck for two goals less than 10 minutes apart to grab a 2-0 lead at the half. In the 11th minute, Abgarian served a corner kick in the box where Orlando one-touched a pass toward the left post that Parker one-timed from in close. Breman then scored in the 21st minute when he one-timed a loose ball from 20 yards out that deflected off a Cortland defender and inside the left post. Cortland's best chance in the first half came in the 40th minute, but Gracholski's free kick from just outside the box sailed over the crossbar.

The Red Dragons nearly got on the scoreboard in the 55th minute. After Marino was whistled for a hand ball in his box for handling a pass back from a defender, Cortland had an indirect free kick. Junior Steve Bartkowski (Buffalo/Kenmore East) touched a pass to junior Matt Kutzer (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), who took a shot through the Brockport wall. The ball caromed toward the goal line but Brockport junior Jeff Palumbo (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) cleared the ball away before it could cross the goal line.

In the 64th minute, Gracholski pulled Cortland to within 2-1. Gunsch lofted a pass toward the top of the box where Schwert touched a pass back to Gracholski, who one-timed a blast into the upper right corner from 23 yards away. The Red Dragons pressed the rest of the game but the Golden Eagles kept Cortland without a quality scoring chance and held on for the win.
