Alana Sullivan teamed with Kristina Lazzaro to win 8-6 at third doubles

CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence won two of three closely contested doubles matches and held on to defeat Cortland, 5-4, in a non-league dual match. The Saints are 2-0 in dual action this fall while Cortland is 7-4. The Red Dragons’ scheduled match Saturday at Plattsburgh has been postponed due to forecasted poor weather.
Cortland’s doubles win came on the third flight as sophomore Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and sophomore Kristina Lazzaro (Williamsville/Williamsville East) won 8-6.
At first doubles, St. Lawrence’s Chelsea Hubbell and Elizabeth Geer rallied from a 7-6 deficit to win 9-7 over sophomore Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia). In second doubles action, Barry Edgar and Shannon Murphy won 8-6 for the Saints versus freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello).
Five of the six singles matches were relatively one-sided affairs. The closest match came at third singles, where Murphy won the last two games of the first set to win 7-5 before posting a 6-1 win in the second set over Medina.
Cortland’s three singles victories were a 6-1, 6-3 win by Jelinek at first singles, a 6-3, 6-2 victory by DiCapua at second singles and a 6-2, 6-1 win by Tretter at fourth singles. Paige Cohen won for St. Lawrence at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Elizabeth Ronty won 6-1, 6-3 at sixth singles.
Cortland will host RIT in a dual match Monday at 3 p.m.
