Oneonta Penalty Kicks Eliminate Cortland in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

Steve Axtell made six saves in Cortland's tie and another great one during penalty kicks
ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland men's soccer team fell to Oneonta 4-3 on penalty kicks in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals after finishing regulation play and two overtime periods with a scoreless tie. With the tie, the Red Dragons close their season with a final record of 5-9-3, while Oneonta advances to the SUNYAC semifinals with a record of 12-4-2.

Both Red Dragon squads traded chances early and finished the first half with five shots each. Cortland outshot Oneonta 9-8 in the second half and gained momentum as time wound down. Cortland created several quality scoring chances with less than 10 minutes to go, but was unable to capitalize. The play was fairly even in the 10-minute overtime periods with Oneonta outshooting Cortland 2-0 in the first, and Cortland returning the favor in the second.

Cortland started the penalty kick round with senior Logan Keeney (Virgil/Cortland) successfully fooling Oneonta goalie Jonathan Korn, but he missed the shot high and wide to the right of the goal. On Oneonta's first attempt Nicholas Lange gave his team a 1-0 lead with a goal in the upper right corner. Junior Steve Bartkowski (Buffalo/Kenmore East) missed Cortland's second attempt, which was also wide to the right. Eric Fortier put Oneonta up 2-0 with a shot that found the lower right corner of the goal.

Cortland Junior Patrick Meany (Delmar/Bethlehem) closed the gap to 2-1 with a shot that beat Korn to the left. Oneonta's Dan Scott brought Cortland to the brink with a goal that increased the lead to 3-1. Junior Matt Kutzer (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored on the next shot making it 3-2.

On Oneonta's next chance Cortland goalie Steve Axtell (Franklin/Sidney) robbed Gary Laronde, diving to his left and deflecting a shot heading for the upper right corner of the net. Cortland sophomore Max Grant (Great Neck/Great Neck South) evened the score at 3-3 with the next shot, putting the pressure back on Oneonta. However Cortland's comeback wasn't meant to be as Oneonta's Ian Tenzer scored on the next kick to send his team to the semifinals.

Cortland outshot Oneonta 16-15 through the 90 minutes of regulation play and the 20 minutes of overtime. Axtell made six saves for Cortland, while Korn finished with three for Oneonta.
