CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) rallied for a three-set victory at sixth singles to snap a 4-4 tie and Cortland defeated visiting RIT, 5-4, in a non-league dual match. The Red Dragons improve to 8-4 with the victory, while the Tigers are now 5-4.

Bagg lost the first set to Julie Burkett 7-6, with a 7-4 tiebreaker, but came back to win the next two sets convincingly, 6-0 and 6-1. The sixth singles flight was the last to finish, and Bagg closed out the final set just as it was starting to rain.

Cortland took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) won 8-5 at second doubles and sophomores Kristina Lazzaro (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) won 8-6 at third doubles.

RIT’s doubles win came on the first flight as junior Amanda Berg and senior Alexis Stanley posted an 8-3 win. Berg and Stanley also won the top two singles flights. Berg defeated Jelinek at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Stanley outlasted DiCapua at second singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Berg’s win tied the match at 4-4 to set up the decisive finish at sixth singles. The Tigers also picked up a win by sophomore Marie Revekant at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Cortland’s singles victories, other than Bagg’s, came in straight sets. Tretter was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at fourth singles and Medina won 7-5, 5-2 at third singles, with her opponent retiring before the second set finished.

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9-11, at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius.
