SUNY Cortland freshman outside hitter Katie Wick (Cortland/Homer) has been chosen as the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Eastern Division women’s volleyball Rookie of the Year. Wick is also one of three Red Dragons to earn first-team all-league honors along with senior outside hitter Michelle Gaufman (Wantagh/MacArthur) and sophomore middle hitter Sheena Asibey (Brentwood).
Wick finished the season with 290 kills (2.2 per set), third best on the team, in 37 matches this fall. She also was second on the Red Dragon squad with 47 service aces and fourth with 2.7 digs per set. Wick played outside hitter most of the season before moving to libero the last two weeks.
Gaufman led Cortland with 386 kills and was third with 391 digs in 37 matches. She graduates as Cortland’s career leader with 1,822 kills and ranks fourth all-time at the College with 1,757 digs.
Asibey was the Red Dragons’ second-leading attacker with 347 kills and led all starters with a .211 attack percentage. She also recorded a team-best 102 blocks in 37 matches.
Cortland finished the season with a 25-12 record and advanced to the SUNYAC championship match for the 24th time in the 26-year history of the tournament.
