WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Cortland, ranked 16th nationally in Division III, was one of three schools to finish with a 4-0 record at the 10-team John Reese Duals, hosted by Wilkes University.

Cortland, along with other Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference members Ithaca and Oneonta, each went undefeated on the afternoon. The Red Dragons opened with a 30-6 win over Centenary College (N.J.), followed by a 21-9 victory over host Wilkes, a 31-9 decision versus King's College and a 46-3 win against the University of Scranton. Cortland wrestlers won 32 of their 40 matches with 10 pins.

Freshman Will Parks (Longwood) went 3-0 with a pin, while nine other Red Dragons finished 2-0 over the four dual matches. Two wrestlers posted wins over nationally ranked opponents in Cortland's victory over 18th-ranked Wilkes. Senior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) defeated fourth-ranked Frank Heffernan at 174 pounds, 4-2, and sophomore Carl Korpi (Miller Place) was a 3-2 winner versus eighth-ranked Zach Pizarro at 197 pounds.

Six Cortland wrestlers pinned their opponents in the win over Scranton – freshman Mike Walker (Uniondale) at 125 pounds, freshman Sean Kempf (Wantagh/MacArthur) at 133 pounds, junior Joey Widrick (Castorland/Beaver River) at 141 pounds, freshman Troy Sterling (Uniondale) at 149 pounds, junior Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) at 165 pounds and senior Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) at heavyweight. Walker and Kempf each finished the day 2-0 with two pins.

Three Red Dragons are nationally ranked: junior Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) is ninth at 149 pounds, while Murphy is 10th at heavyweight and senior Dave Colagiovanni (Mahopac) is 10th at 133 pounds. Perez won matches versus Centenary and Wilkes. Murphy finished the day 2-1 with a pin and Colagiovanni was 1-1, with both of their setbacks coming versus Wilkes.

Cortland will compete at the Oneonta Invitational next Saturday.
