SUNY Cortland has been selected to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northwest football bowl game and will travel to St. John Fisher College on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m.
Cortland, led by 13th-year head coach
Dan MacNeill, finished the regular season 7-3 and placed third out of 10 teams in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings with a 7-2 record.
Cortland is making its 15th postseason appearance overall and seventh in the last eight years. The Red Dragons have appeared in the NCAA playoffs six times, including a run to the national quarterfinals in 2008, and are 5-3 in eight previous ECAC showings.
Cortland won ECAC Northwest titles in 1991 (21-6 at home vs. Plymouth State), 1992 (38-20 at home vs. Bentley) and 2002 (30-7 at home vs. Westfield State), and Northeast titles in 1994 (15-6 at Maine Maritime) and 2007 (23-7 at home vs. Union). The Red Dragons also lost in the 1995 Northeast game (49-26 at Springfield), the 2003 Northwest game (47-37 at St. John Fisher) and the 2006 Northeast game (26-7 at home vs. Rensselaer).
St. John Fisher finished the regular season 6-3, including a 6-1 mark versus regional opponents. The Cardinals tied for first place in the Empire 8 with a 4-1 record, but missed out on the league's NCAA automatic berth due to a 31-28 loss to Alfred. St. John Fisher's other losses were to defending national champion Mount Union and on the road at Salisbury University.
Cortland and St. John Fisher have met five times previously. In addition to the 2003 ECAC meeting, Cortland won four straight regular-season meetings from 1988-91.
