SALISBURY, MD. – The nationally second-ranked Salisbury field hockey team scored goals just 26 seconds apart late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and held on for a 3-2 win versus fifth-ranked Cortland in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons finished the season with a 19-1 record and tied for fifth nationally for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons under 12th-year head coach
Cynthia Wetmore. The Sea Gulls, who fell to Cortland 4-3 in overtime in the second round last season, improved to 18-1.
Junior
Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) scored a goal and added an assist for Cortland, and freshman
Liz DeWaters (Lockport/Royalton-Hartland) also tallied a goal. Junior goalie
Ashley Hughes (Selden/Comsewogue) made eight saves.
Lauren Correll led Salisbury with a goal and an assist, while Tara McGovern and Alison Bloodsworth each scored a goal. Goalie Anna Cooke stopped three shots.
Semit gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead 14 minutes, 21 seconds into the game with her team-high 12th goal of the season. The Sea Gulls made it a 1-1 game heading into intermission when Correll set up McGovern's goal at 26:26. The game remained deadlocked until Salisbury struck for a pair of goals at 63:16 and 63:42. Bloodsworth scored unassisted to gave the Sea Gulls a 2-1 lead and Correll added an important insurance goal on a fast break. Cortland pulled to within 3-2 with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation as Semit assisted on DeWaters' sixth goal of the season, but the Red Dragons ran out of time and Salisbury clinched the win and the trip to the "final four" next weekend.
Salisbury out shot Cortland, 15-8, in the game and held a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.
