CANTON, N.Y. – Five Cortland athletes won individual events and the Red Dragons posted numerous top-five finishes at the non-team scoring St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays.
Freshman Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.81 seconds (8.72 in prelims) and qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships. She also placed fourth in the high jump at 1.48 meters (4’ 10.25”). Freshman Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse)won the long jump at 4.91 meters (16’ 1.5”) and was third in the triple jump at 10.15 meters (33’ 3.75”).
Freshman Joy’a Green (Syracuse/Corcoran) won the triple jump with a distance of 10.68 meters (35’ 0.5”) and placed fifth in the long jump at 4.50 meters (14’ 9.25”). Sophomore Jenna Evarts (West Islip) won the 55-meter dash (7.59) and freshman Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai) took top honors in the pole vault with an ECAC-qualifying height of 3.35 meters (10’ 11.75”).
Cortland also won the 4x400-meter relay as freshman Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North), freshman Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Acdaemy), freshman Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) and sophomore Valerie Basciano (New City/Albertus Magnus) finished in 4:20.66.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Evarts, freshman Erin Militello (Rochester/Gates-Chili), Schafer and Green qualified for ECACs with a second-place time of 1:50.34. Freshman Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) also qualified for ECACs with her second-place time of 8.82 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles. Sophomore Brenna Filipello (Delmar/Bethlehem) finished second in the high jump at 1.48 meters (4’ 10.25”) and placed third in the 55-meter hurdles (9.24). Fairbanks was the runner-up in the mile run (5:22.76) and finished third in the 800 meters (2:26.15).
Freshman Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished second in the long jump at 4.79 meters (15’ 8.75”) and tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.43 meters (4’ 8.25”). Militello was third in the 55-meter dash (7.76) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.72). Junior Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) and senior Nicole Ragard (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) tied for second place in the pole vault, each clearing 3.05 meters (10’ 0”).
Freshman Michelle Thomas (Greenville) placed third in the high jump at 1.48 meters (4’ 10.25”). Filipello, Thomas and Schafer each cleared the same height in the high jump, but finished second, third and fourth, respectively, due to their number of misses at their last successful height.
Naylon recorded a fourth-place time of 5:25.45 in the mile and was fifth in the 800 meters (2:28.65). Sophomore Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) finished fifth in both the 400 meters (1:02.38) and 200 meters (27.92). Sophomore Brittani Sahm (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) was fourth in the 55-meter dash (7.79) and Basciano finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:28.31). The tandem of Sahm, Montrose, Filipello and Thomas finished fourth in the 4x200-meter relay (1:53.61).
