Joe Murphy recorded one of Cortland's five pins and shares the team lead this season with 29 victories
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Five of Cortland's eight victories came by pin as the Red Dragons defeated host RIT, 40-9, in a dual match at Clark Gymnasium. Cortland improves to 10-6 with the victory, while the host Tigers drop to 6-10.
Senior Peppy Cabrera (Brentwood) pinned his opponent in just 52 seconds at 125 pounds and junior Dave Colagiovanni (Mahopac) won by pin in 3:33 at 133 pounds. Other Cortland pins were recorded by junior Kevin Sackett (Webster/Webster Thomas) at 149 pounds in 1:52, sophomore Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) at 157 pounds in 1:57 and junior Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) at heavyweight in 3:32.
Despite the five pins, Cortland's most impressive win of the night came via decision. Sophomore Joey Widrick (Castorland/Beaver River) upset nationally fourth-ranked Luke Baum 3-1 at 141 pounds. Baum entered the match with a 30-6 record overall and was undefeated in dual matches this winter.
Cortland's other victories were a 12-4 major decision by junior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) at 184 pounds and a 3-2 victory by junior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) at 174 pounds.
Murphy and Ciaburri share the team lead this season with 29 victories apiece. Sackett has 28 wins, Widrick has 25 victories, Sottile has 24 and Colagiovanni has 22. Cabrera improved to 17-3 on the year with his win.
Cortland will compete in a quad meet at York (Pa.) College this Saturday at 10 a.m. and will host Ithaca College next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
