Second-Half Comeback Falls Short in 13-10 Loss at Div. I Davidson

Freshman Lindsay Abbott led Cortland with three goals
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Five different players scored two goals each and Division I Davidson held off nationally 12th-ranked Cortland, 13-10, Thursday night in women's lacrosse action. The Red Dragons fell to 1-1 with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 5-2 in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.

Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) led Cortland with three goals. Freshman Erin Kollar (East Islip) contributed two goals and an assist, senior Meghan Gallagher (Long Beach) scored twice and senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) and junior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each recorded two assists. Freshman goalie Amanda Caloia (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) made seven saves.

Haley Cook had two goals and an assist to pace the Wildcats. Jen Crawford, Jenna Mugele, Anna Smith and Liz Wall scored two goal apiece. Michelle Pav stopped eight shots in goal.

Cook gave Davidson the lead one minute, 27 seconds into the game with a free-position goal. Abbott then netted back-to-back unassisted scores to give Cortland its only lead of the game at 24:34. The Wildcats answered with the next four goals for a 5-2 lead before sophomore Mallory Palmieri (Bellmore/John F. Kennedy) pulled the Red Dragons to within 5-3 at the half.

The Wildcats appeared to take control of the game with five of the first six goals of the second half for a 10-4 lead with 21:36 remaining in the game. Cortland, however, began a furious rally with three straight goals from Gallagher, Abbott and freshman Jordan Miller (Liverpool) to cut the lead to 10-7 with 12:29 on the clock. Smith scored her second of the game for the Wildcats at 10:09 to slow Cortland's momentum, but the Red Dragons rallied for another three-goal run to make it 11-10 with 5:48 left in the game. Gallagher again started the surge, followed by goals from Kollar and sophomore Brianna Shost (Mahopac).

Davidson secured a two-goal lead on a free-position goal from Heather Frohman and sealed the win with 51 seconds left on Mugele's second goal of the game.
