Three members of the SUNY Cortland women's lacrosse team have earned Division III All-America honors for the 2009 season.
Senior attacker
Danielle Torre (Massapequa) was named a first team All-American and both freshman midfielder
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) and senior defender
Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern) were chosen as second team All-Americans by both the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and the web site womenslacrosse.com.
Torre, Abbott and Bakker were all IWLCA first team All-Empire Region selections, with senior defender
Anna Fahey (Syracuse/West Genesee) earning second team all-region honors. Abbott was chosen to the womenslacrosse.com national All-Rookie team as well.
Torre was also honored as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Division III Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year. Abbott and Bakker joined Torre on the All-ECAC Upstate New York first team. In addition, Torre will represent Cortland at the annual North-South Senior All-Star Game at the United States Training Center in Downington, Pa., on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m.
Torre led Cortland this spring with 80 goals and 28 assists for 108 total points. She broke school records for goals and points in a season and was the first Red Dragon to eclipse the single-season 100-point mark. Torre scored three or more goals in 18 of 21 games, including six goals versus both Ithaca and Brockport and five goals in six other games.
Abbott finished the season with 72 goals and 16 assists for 88 points in 21 games. Her 72 goals are the most ever scored by a Cortland freshman, and her 88 points are the third-highest single-season total in school history behind Torre's 108 this spring and Brooke VandeWalker's 94 points in 2002. Abbott scored at least one goal in every game, including seven in a win at Oneonta and six in a home victory versus Geneseo.
Bakker and Fahey led a defensive unit that allowed eight goals or less in a game 11 times this spring. Bakker led Cortland with 46 caused turnovers and 77 ground balls. She also has four goals scored and two assists. Fahey registered 35 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers and scored once.
Cortland finished the season with a 14-7 record. The Red Dragons won their 11th straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and made their 11th consecutive NCAA Division III tournament appearance. Cortland finished tied for ninth nationally after advancing to the NCAA second round. The Red Dragons have played in at least the second round in each of their last 11 NCAA showings.
