Cortland Receives Bye Into NCAA Second Round; Red Dragons to Host Springfield May 9

Cortland's 14-13 win at Geneseo last Saturday gave the Red Dragons their eighth SUNYAC title in the last 10 years
The SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team has received a bye into the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament and will host Springfield College (Mass.) on Saturday, May 9, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time is 1 p.m. Springfield defeated Mount Ida in a first-round game Wednesday at Springfield.

The winner of Saturday's game advances to the national quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 13, and will face either Tufts University (Mass.) or Western New England College (Mass.). The national semifinals will also be held on campus sites on Sunday, May 17. The Division III national championship game is Sunday, May 24, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Cortland (15-2) is making its ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance and 25th overall, including 18 on the Division III level. The Red Dragons – national runner-up each of the last two seasons and national champion in 2006 – earned their playoff berth by winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title this past Saturday with a 14-13 win at Geneseo.

Freshman attack Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) leads Cortland with 40 goals scored and 55 total points. Junior attack Brian Krol (Niskayuna) has 34 goals and 12 assists for 46 points and freshman attack Greg Wright (Irondequoit) has 21 goals and a team-high 20 assists for 41 points.

Sophomore midfielder Chris DeLuca (Sayville) is the team's top faceoff specialist with a .720 success rate (170-of-236). He also has recorded 21 goals and 17 assists and leads the team with 96 ground balls. Senior midfielder Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley) has 23 goals and 12 assists despite playing in just 15 games with 14 starts.

Cortland's defense, led by seniors Luke Lemon (Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy) and Matt Noble (La Fayette) and sophomore Justin Schneidman (Katonah/John Jay), has allowed less than 6.5 goals per game. Senior goalie Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) has started 16 games and has a 6.85 goals against average and a .503 save percentage.
