Senior Danielle Torre
SUNY Cortland senior attacker Danielle Torre (Massapequa) has been named the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year.

Torre is one of five Red Dragons on the all-league team. Joining her on the first team are freshman midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central), junior midfielder Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and senior defender Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern). Senior defender Anna Fahey (Syracuse/West Genesee) was selected to the second team.

Through the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament, Torre leads Cortland with 77 goals and 28 assists for 105 total points. She has broken school records for both goals scored and total points scored in a season, and is the first Red Dragon to eclipse the single-season 100-point mark.

Abbott is second on the team with 69 goals and 85 total points. She is the first freshman in school history to score more than 50 goals in a season. Fritz is third on the team with 30 goals and 20 assists for 50 points despite missing six of Cortland’s 20 games due to injury.

Bakker and Fahey lead a defensive unit that has allowed eight goals or less in a game 11 times this spring. Bakker is Cortland’s leader with 44 caused turnovers and 75 ground balls. She also has four goals scored and two assists. Fahey has registered 34 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers and has scored once.

Cortland (14-6) defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA tournament opening round and will play at The College of New Jersey in the second round Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Red Dragons won their 11th straight SUNYAC title and are making their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance this spring.
