CORTLAND, N.Y. – Alison Jaeger led six College of New Jersey multiple-goal scorers with four goals as the nationally fourth-ranked Lions defeated 16th-ranked Cortland, 17-7, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) and senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored three goals each for Cortland, which finishes the season with a 14-7 record. The Red Dragons were making their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, and advanced to at least the second round each of those years.

Lisa Seldeen scored three goals, and both Rachel Gordon and Katie Reuther added two goals and one assist for TCNJ (16-2). Jackie Riley and Sara Keating also scored two goals each for The Lions, who will host either Gettysburg or Roanoke in the national quarterfinals Sunday.

TCNJ goalie Mary Waller finished with six saves. Freshman Brianna Straut (Nanuet) started in goal for Cortland and made seven saves while allowing 10 goals in 38:58. Freshman Amanda Caloia (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) stopped five shots and gave up seven goals in 21:02 of action.

Cortland took an early 2-1 lead eight minutes into the game on two Abbott goals, sandwiched around a Reuther tally. Gordon answered with two goals 1:24 apart to give TCNJ a 3-2 lead, and the margin grew to four at 6-2 with 13:25 left in the half.

TCNJ led 9-4 at halftime, and Cortland was within 10-5 on a Torre goal with 22:03 left in the game. The hosts, however, went on a 7-1 run over the next 18 minutes, with Jaeger and Riley scoring twice apiece during that stretch.

Torre finished the scoring with a goal at the 3:35 mark and finished the season with 80 goals and 28 assists for 108 points. She set school records this spring for both goals and total points scored in a season, and she finishes ranked 14th at Cortland with 157 career points despite playing just two seasons after transferring from Nassau Community College.

Abbott completed the best freshman offensive campaign in school history with 72 goals and 16 assists for 88 points. Her 72 goals are easily the most ever scored by a Cortland freshman, and her 88 points are the third-highest total for any player in school history behind Torre’s 108 this spring and Brooke VandeWalker’s 94 points in 2002.
