ITHACA, N.Y. – Host Ithaca College won all six singles matches and defeated visiting Cortland, 8-1, in a non-league dual match. The Bombers improved to 2-1 with the decision and Cortland falls to 5-2.
Cortland earned its lone point at second doubles. Freshman
Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) and sophomore
Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) earned a 9-8 victory after posting a 7-3 tiebreaker win.
For Ithaca, Agata Kubik and Cristina Nunez won 8-4 at first doubles and Sarah Hollis and Devra Reiman teamed to win 8-3 at third doubles.
In singles action, Nunez won at first singles, 6-2, 6-0. Melanie Cohen won at second singles and Devra Reiman won at third singles, both by 6-3, 6-3 scores. Hollis earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at fourth singles and Becky Campbell was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at sixth singles.
At fifth singles, Cortland's
Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and Ithaca's Kelsey Harness split their first two sets. Harness won the first set, 6-4, and Sullivan won 6-3 in the second set. They then played a 10-point super tiebreaker instead of a third set due to impending darkness, plus the fact that the team verdict was already decided. Harness won the super tiebreaker, 10-5, to win the match.
Cortland returns to SUNYAC action on Friday, Sept. 18, when it hosts New Paltz at 3:30 p.m.
