CORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite winning the first two flights in singles, the Cortland women's tennis team lost to New Paltz, 6-3, in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons fell to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Hawks improved to 6-1 and 5-1.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead after three doubles matches. In first doubles, junior Stephanie Schara (Huntington/Kellenberg) teamed with junior Lindsey Garyn (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) to defeat Cortland sophomores Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and Alyssa Tretter (Batavia), 8-5. The Hawks also won second doubles with freshmen Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) and Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool) teaming to best freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer) and sophomore Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello), 8-4. The Red Dragons captured third doubles, 8-4, as sophomores Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and Kristina Lazzaro (Williamsville/Williamsville East) defeated seniors Lyndsey Lovinger (Miller Place) and Kerri Serkes (Massapequa).

In singles play, Jelinek defeated Schara, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in the first flight, and Medina won over Wilson, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 super tiebreaker at second singles. The Hawks, however, captured third through sixth singles to win the match. DiCapua and Lazarro were unable to compete in their normal singles flights, and sophomores Megan Bagg (Lake Placid/The Northwood School) and Amanda Bieglecki (Brewster) stepped into the lineup.
