CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) won in straight sets at first singles for the decisive point as Cortland edged Oneonta, 5-4, in a SUNYAC dual match. The host Red Dragons improved to 6-3 with the win and Oneonta falls to 5-3. Both teams are now 4-2 in SUNYAC play.

Oneonta briefly pulled into a tie a 4-4 when Emily Shannon outlasted Gabriela Medina (Rock Hill/Monticello) at third singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. About 10 minutes later, however, Jelinek wrapped up her 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory over Jennifer Kraham to give Cortland the win. Jelinek let a 5-3 lead slip away in the first set and trailed 6-5 before rallying to tie the set and force a tiebreaker.

Cortland led 2-1 after doubles play. Sophomores Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) won at first doubles and Jelinek and Medina won at second doubles, both by 8-3 counts. Kraham and Elizabeth Flamman won 8-3 at third doubles for Oneonta.

The teams split the first two completed singles matches, with Tretter winning 6-2, 6-1 for Cortland on the fourth flight and Katie Wlodarczyk winning 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles. DiCapua's 6-3, 6-1 victory at second singles put Cortland ahead 4-2.

Oneonta's Danielle Browarski won in three sets versus Alana Sullivan (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) at fifth singles, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, to close the deficit to 4-3. Down 5-2 in the third set, Sullivan fought off a match point and eventually closed to within 5-4 before falling.

Cortland will send Jelinek and DiCapua in singles play and the combination of DiCapua and Tretter in doubles play to the ITA Northeast Regionals at William Smith this Friday through Sunday. Cortland will also compete Friday in a dual match at Wells College with its remaining players. Also, Cortland's originally listed home match Sept. 29 versus St. Lawrence was incorrect. Cortland has just one home match remaining this fall – a meeting with RIT on Monday, Oct. 5.
