GENEVA, N.Y. - Cortland freshman Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) won three matches before eventually losing in the semifinals in the singles consolation bracket at the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted Friday through Sunday at William Smith College.
Jelinek lost her first match in the singles championship bracket to Skidmore's Laura Attley, 6-1, 6-3. She came back later Friday and opened the consolation flight with an 8-4 win over Steph Krupa of Richard Stockton. On Saturday, Jelinek beat William Smith's Shari Damon, 8-6, and St. Lawrence's Elizabeth Geer, 8-4. Jelinek was eliminated in the semifinals Sunday by Alex Goodman of Rochester, 8-5.
Sophomore Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) also competed for Cortland in the singles competition. She lost to Agata Kubik of Ithaca, 6-4, 6-1, in the championship bracket, then won her first consolation match over Elizabeth Way of Nazareth, 8-6. She was knocked out in the next round by Lindsey Garyn of New Paltz, 8-1.
In doubles play, DiCapua and sophomore Alyssa Tretter (Batavia) lost 8-1 to Lia Weiner and Frances Tseng of Rochester and were edged 9-8 by Shari Damon and Jess McCue of William Smith.
