Senior Gerard Heinz registered a goal and two assists all on the power play

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Corey John (Albany/SUNY Plattsburgh) had a goal and three assists and senior Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) recorded a goal and two assists to lead the Cortland men's hockey team to a 5-4 win versus Lebanon Valley Tuesday night at Alumni Arena in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 6-10 with the victory, while the Flying Dutchmen remained winless on the season at 0-15.

Senior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) added a goal and an assist for Cortland, and junior Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and sophomore Marcus Oeberg (Leksand, Sweden/Becker College) scored goals. Junior Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats) chipped in with two assists, and junior goalie Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) stopped 11 shots.

Freshman Daniel Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Boston AAA Rangers) recorded his first career hat trick to lead Lebanon Valley. Freshman Wesley Landsem (Brooklyn Center, MI/San Antonio Diablos) notched a goal, freshman Rory Wilkowich (Okotoks, AB/San Diego Gulls) collected two assists and five other players had one assist each. Freshman goalie Daniel Ramirez (Miami, FL/Wheatfield Blades) stopped 42 shots in his first career action.

The Red Dragons built a 2-0 lead on power-play goals from John and Heinz at five minutes, 50 seconds and 12:50, respectively, in the first period. Dempsey cut the lead to 2-1 with a rebound goal at 15:16 of the first.

Palmisano made it a 3-1 game with the man advantage at 3:18 of the second on a deflection in front, and Oeberg knocked in a loose puck at 5:49 on a delayed penalty to up the lead to 4-1. Dempsey scored his second at 8:28 and Landsem converted a 3-on-2 at 15:04 to pull the Flying Dutchmen to within 4-3. Cortland made it 5-3 heading to the second intermission as Gold scored the Red Dragons' fourth power-play goal of the game at 17:45.

At the end of the second period and early in the third, Lebanon Valley killed off a two-man Cortland advantage, and moments after being released from the penalty box, Dempsey completed the hat trick with a short-handed breakaway goal at 1:25. The Flying Dutchmen had limited chances the rest of the period and were only able to pull Ramirez for an extra skater with 11 seconds remaining after a whistle. Cortland won the ensuing faceoff in its own zone and successfully cleared the puck to seal the win.
