WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland wrestling team won three matches to advance to the semifinals of the 20-team Budd Whitehill Div. III Duals, hosted by Lycoming College. The Red Dragons defeated Case Western Reserve, 44-6, King's College of Pennsylvania, 28-6, and 28th-ranked Springfield College, 19-12.

Cortland (12-1), the tournament's third seed, will face second-seeded and nationally seventh-ranked The College of New Jersey Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Red Dragons will then compete against either fourth-ranked Ithaca or 16th-ranked Wilkes in either the championship match or the third-place match at 3 p.m.

Cortland took an early 18-0 lead versus Case Western by virtue of two forfeit wins and a pin by nationally third-ranked 133-pounder Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale). Following two decisions by Case Western, Cortland concluded the match with five straight wins. Senior Kevin Sackett (Webster/Webster Thomas) won by a 9-0 major decision at 165 pounds and freshman Jon Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) earned a 13-5 major decision at 174 pounds. The last three victories were pins by freshman Jared Myhrberg (Queensbury) at 184 pounds, nationally sixth-ranked Carl Korpi (Miller Place) at 197 pounds and senior Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) at heavyweight.

The Red Dragons also started quickly versus King's and led 12-0 after four matches. Junior Jared Lemke (Alden) won at 125 pounds, Sterling was a winner at 133 pounds, sophomore Mark Arcara (Harrison) won at 141 pounds and freshman Troy Sterling (Uniondale) was victorious at 149 pounds.

Senior Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota) posted a win at 165 pounds and senior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon), ranked 10th nationally at 174 pounds, earned a 14-2 major decision. Senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) was a 13-2 major decision winner at 197 pounds and Murphy notched a technical fall with a 15-0 decision at heavyweight.

In the quarterfinals, Korpi and Murphy won the final two matches to snap a 12-12 tie and give the Red Dragons a 19-12 victory over Springfield. The Pride led 6-0 after two matches, including a 2-1 upset win by Josephy Grippi over Aljamain Sterling at 133 pounds. Cortland took a 9-6 lead with 3-2 decisions by Arcara and junior Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) and a 3-1 win by Sackett.

With the match tied at 9-9, Ciaburri posted a 6-2 decision at 174 pounds to give Cortland the lead. Springfield, however, won at 184 pounds to re-tie the match at 12-12. Korpi's 12-4 major decision at 197 pounds gave the Red Dragons the lead for good, and Murphy sealed the win with a 3-1 overtime decision by recording a takedown early in the first sudden-victory extra session.
