POTSDAM, N.Y. - Freshman goalie Sarah Sitcov (Arlington, VA/Wyoming Seminary) stopped 32 shots and sophomore Julia Fleming (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) netted two goals as the Cortland women's ice hockey team defeated host Potsdam, 4-0, Saturday afternoon to earn a split in the two-game weekend series. The Red Dragons improved to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the ECAC West, while the Bears fell to 6-7-1 and 3-6.

Sophomore Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) and freshman Chelsey Wright (Medford/Suffolk PAL) also scored goals for Cortland. Freshman Sam Kuntz (Somers/Brewster Bulldogs) recorded two assists, and sophomores Danielle Scharf (Hopewell Junction/Berkshire School) and Ashley Meyer (New York/Sound Shore Warriors) each chipped in with an assist.

Sitcov recorded her second shutout of the season. Hilary Hitchman started in goal for Potsdam and made 15 saves while allowing four goals in two periods. Jen Conophy stopped all four shots on goal she faced over the final 20 minutes.

Giamo opened the scoring three minutes, 20 seconds into the game with her team-high seventh goal of the season, assisted by Scharf and Kuntz. The Red Dragons added to their lead with 7:28 left in the first when Fleming scored her first goal of the season, also assisted by Kuntz.

Cortland was unable to capitalize on three power play opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but still added to its lead when Wright scored her fifth goal of the season with 6:33 left in the period and each team down one skater. Fleming's second goal, set up by Meyer, gave Cortland a 4-0 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the second.

The Red Dragons preserved the shutout by killing off three Potsdam power plays in the third period, including a two-skater advantage for 1:21 late in the contest. Cortland won despite a 32-23 Potsdam advantage in shots on goal, 16-4 in the third period.
