Martino Sottile defeated the nationally seventh-ranked wrestler from Wilkes at 197 pounds
WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – Cortland finished third out of 20 teams at the Budd Whitehill Div. III Duals at Lycoming College. The Red Dragons, ranked 15th nationally, were edged by seventh-ranked The College of New Jersey, 18-16, but bounced back to defeat 16th-ranked Wilkes, 24-12, in the third-place match. Cortland went 4-1 at the tournament and is 13-2 on the season.
In the semifinals, Cortland took an early 10-6 lead as junior
Jared Lemke (Alden) won 7-3 at 125 pounds, sophomore
Mark Arcara (Harrison) earned a 13-4 major decision at 141 pounds and junior
Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) won 6-2 at 149 pounds. Perez's opponent, John Barnett, is ranked eighth nationally at 141 pounds. TCNJ's win in that stretch was a pin at 133 pounds.
The Lions won four straight matches, two in overtime, to take an 18-10 lead. Dan Dicolo, ranked seventh at 157 pounds, used a takedown in the first sudden-victory period to beat
Kevin Sackett (Webster/Webster Thomas), 5-3. Brian Broderick beat
Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) 5-1 at 174 pounds with four points in the second overtime tiebreaker period.
Cortland stayed alive with a 6-2 victory by sophomore
Carl Korpi (Miller Place) at 197 pounds over nationally ninth-ranked Adam Koziol. Senior heavyweight
Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) concluded the match with a 7-4 decision, leaving the Red Dragons two points short.
In the third-place match, Cortland trailed 9-0 after two matches due to a Wilkes decision and a forfeit victory. Arcara won 8-2 at 141 pounds, but the Colonels won at 149 pounds to take a 12-3 lead.
The Red Dragons, however, answered by winning the last six matches. Junior
Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won 9-5 at 157 pounds, freshman Jon Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) was a 9-4 winner at 165 pounds and Ciaburri won 5-0 at 174 pounds. Freshman
Alex Meyers (Morrisville/Morrisville-Eaton) claimed a 6-4 win at 184 pounds, senior
Martino Sottile (Brentwood) defeated nationally seventh-ranked Zach Pizzaro 3-2 at 197 pounds and Murphy won by forfeit at heavyweight.
