Jared Lemke pinned his opponent 26 seconds into overtime in the evening's first match
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won seven matches, including pins by junior
Jared Lemke (Alden) and senior
Kevin Sackett (Webster/Webster Thomas), and the nationally 15th-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Oneonta, 26-12. Cortland is 14-2 and Oneonta falls to 8-6 in dual action this season.
Lemke won the night's first match at 125 pounds with his pin in overtime versus Zachary Cogen (Bellmore/Bellmore JFK). The wrestlers were tied 1-1 entering the one-minute sudden-victory extra session. Lemke recorded the pin 26 seconds into the overtime and is now 19-8 on the season. Sackett upped his record to 20-8 with his pin in 4:52 at 157 pounds. He leads Cortland this winter with nine pins.
Cortland also earned decisions by two-point margins from sophomore
Mike Pagano (Merrick/Calhoun) at 141 pounds (3-1), junior
Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) at 149 pounds (8-6) and senior
Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota) at 165 pounds (3-1) to take a 21-6 lead at the midway point of the match. Pagano improved to 13-7, Perez is now 20-5 and Brodfuehrer is now 18-7.
Oneonta picked up a forfeit win by Andrew Cabibbo (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) at 133 pounds, then earned decisions at 174 and 184 pounds. Freshman Chris Wade (Islip) upset nationally 10th-ranked
Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon), 6-4 in sudden victory overtime, at 174 pounds and Wake was a 6-2 winner at 184 pounds. Those wins, combined with a Cortland deducted team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, cut the host's lead to 20-12 with two matches remaining.
Cortland, however, sealed the win when sophomore
Carl Korpi (Miller Place), ranked sixth nationally at 197 pounds, posted a 9-4 decision. Korpi upped his record to 20-4 with the victory. Senior
Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) concluded the evening with a 9-2 victory at heavyweight for his team-high 24th win of the season versus only three losses.
Cortland returns to action this Saturday and Sunday at the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships, hosted by Cornell University.
