ITHACA, N.Y. – Behind seven all-state performances, the Cortland wrestling team finished in sixth place out of 18 schools at the all-division New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships, hosted by Cornell University.

The Red Dragons were the second-highest Division III team in the final standings with 78.5 points. Cornell won the title with 194 points, followed by Army (158), Buffalo (149.5), Binghamton (143.5), Ithaca (106), Cortland, Oneonta (57) and Brockport (52) in the top eight.

Senior Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) earned all-state honors at heavyweight for the third straight year. He finished in third place this season after placing fifth a year ago and eighth in 2008. The top eight finishers in each weight class are designated as all-state wrestlers.

Senior Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota) finished fifth at 165 pounds to repeat as an all-state honoree. He was fourth in the weight class last season. Sophomore Carl Korpi (Miller Place) finished fifth at 197 pounds and three Red Dragons turned in sixth-place showings – sophomore Mark Arcara (Harrison) at 141 pounds, junior Stephen Perez (Bronx/Francis Lewis) at 149 pounds and freshman Jared Myhrberg (Queensbury) at 184 pounds.

In addition, senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) finished seventh at 197 pounds to earn his second straight all-state recognition. Sottile finished third at 184 pounds last year.

Murphy, seeded third at heavyweight, won his first match before losing in the semifinals to second-seeded Taylor Moore of Cornell, 3-2. Murphy posted two one-point decisions in the wrestlebacks to take third place. Brodfuehrer won his opening match as the fifth seed at 165 pounds but lost his second match. He came back to win twice before losing another match, then won by medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.

Korpi, seeded fifth at 197 pounds, started with two wins before losing to the top seed, Cam Simaz of Cornell, in the semifinals. After a loss in the wrestlebacks, Korpi won 5-3 in the fifth-place match. Arcara won his only two matches as fourth seed at 141 pounds. He medically forfeited in the semifinals as well as two other matches to finish sixth.

Perez was 3-2 as the sixth seed at 149 pounds before medically forfeiting in the fifth-place match. Myhrberg, unseeded at 184 pounds, recovered from an opening loss to win three straight matches before losing twice, including the fifth-place match. Sottile, seeded seventh at 197 pounds, split his first four matches before winning by medical forfeit in the seventh-place match.
