BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds and four assists and sophomore Micki Volpini (Newfield) recorded 19 points and five steals as Cortland extended its winning streak to nine games with a 68-56 win at Brockport.

The Red Dragons are 14-3 overall and remain tied for first with Oneonta in the SUNYAC standings with a 9-1 mark. Brockport, the two-time defending league champion, falls to 4-13 and 2-8.

Sophomore Mary Bruns (Brooklyn/Bishop Ford) scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds to help the Red Dragon cause. Sophomore Allyson Biordi (Beacon) finished with five assists and junior Jen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) handed out four assists.

Whitney Smith (Webster/Webster Thomas) led the host Golden Eagles with 19 points and seven rebounds. Rachel Csakany (Schenectady) and Lacey Grove (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) scored nine points apiece.

Cortland shot 50 percent from the field (27-of-54) and outrebounded Brockport by a 40-25 margin. Laing hit 8-of-12 shots, Volpini was 8-of-13 and Bruns went 6-of-10.

Brockport led 16-9 after a Grove jumper with 13:25 left in the first half, but Cortland used an 11-4 run, capped by a Volpini three-pointer, and led 20-18 with 10:35 left. Brockport briefly tied the game on two Erica Johnson (Malone/Franklin Academy) foul shots, but the Red Dragons scored the next 10 points and led 30-20 with 5:10 remaining. Bruns and Volpini each made two baskets during that key stretch.

Cortland’s lead grew to 37-22 on a Miranda Lustig (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) layup with 2:17 left, but Brockport scored the final five points of the half and trailed by 10 at halftime. Down 11 points with 14 minutes left, the Golden Eagles tallied seven straight points, the last five by Grove, and were within four at 48-44 with 9:28 left.

After the teams traded three-pointers, the Red Dragons put the game away with a 16-2 run over a four-minute stretch. Laing scored six points to key the run and Bruns’ jumper with 3:41 left gave Cortland a 67-49 lead. Brockport outscored Cortland 7-1 over the final 3:16 to create the final margin.
