CORTLAND, N.Y. – Delaware Valley, ranked fifth nationally in Division III, won seven of 10 matches, including a pin and a forfeit win, and the Aggies defeated 14th-ranked Cortland, 27-12, in Cortland's final home dual match of the season. Delaware Valley is now 9-2 with the win and the Red Dragons slip to 14-3.
Cortland took an early 6-0 lead when freshman
Sean Kempf (Wantagh/MacArthur) won by disqualification at 125 pounds. Kempf was injured due to an illegal move by his opponent and was unable to continue. The Aggies, however, won by forfeit at 133 pounds and took a 12-6 lead when Zak Andrews (Emmaus, PA) pinned his foe in five minutes, 51 seconds.
Delaware Valley extended its lead to 21-6 with decisions in each of the next three matches. Emmanuel Ajagbe (Bogota, NJ), ranked eighth nationally, won 6-1 at 149 pounds and Jesse Harrington (New Providence, NJ/Bound Brook), the nation's top Div. III wrestler at 157 pounds, posted a 7-3 decision. Justin Barowski (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) followed with a 3-2 decision over
Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota) at 165 pounds. Barowski recorded what proved to be the winning takedown with 1:12 left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie.
Cortland got on the board at 174 pounds when
Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) earned a 6-3 decision for his 20th victory of the season. Ciaburri took a 4-3 lead with an escape with 1:36 left and secured the victory with a takedown with 10 seconds remaining.
The Aggies responded with a 4-2 win by Brian Boudro (Richmond, MI/Amada) at 184 pounds to put the match out of reach. Boudro broke a 2-2 tie with an escape with 1:01 left and added a point for riding time.
The final two matches of the evening featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. At 197 pounds, Cortland's
Carl Korpi (Miller Place), ranked sixth nationally, earned a hard-fought 7-6 win over Martin Porter (Long Branch, NJ). Porter is ranked 10th at 184 pounds but is now wrestling up a weight class. Korpi trailed 5-3 before tying the match on a takedown with 1:36 left. Porter regained the lead with an escape five seconds later, but Korpi recorded the winning takedown with 18 seconds left and held on for the win.
At heavyweight, nationally second-ranked Kyle Bilquist (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) of Delaware Valley edged 10th-ranked
Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown), 3-2, for only Murphy's fifth loss in 32 decisions this season. Bilquist took a 2-0 lead with a first-period takedown and scored the decisive point on an escape early in the third period.
