GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior Dustin Marshall (Newfield) tied the game with a jumper in the final seconds of regulation and finished two assists shy of a triple-double as Cortland outlasted Geneseo in double overtime, 87-73, in a SUNYAC battle.

The Red Dragons improved to 12-6 with their fifth straight win and remain one game behind Brockport in the league standings with an 8-3 mark.

Marshall finished with 20 points and career-highs of 10 rebounds and eight assists. Senior Paul Oliver (Phoenix) also scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds and sophomore Brian Manning (Elmira/Elmira Southside) matched his career high with 14 points. Freshman Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) added 13 points and senior Ben Nagle (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) turned in a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Kyle Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Spa Catholic) led five Geneseo double-figure scorers with 17 points and Brandon Simpson (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) scored 16 points. John Scott (Albany/Albany Academy) pitched in with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, Mike Hoy (Batavia) scored 11 points and Abe Miller (Buffalo/City Honors) scored 10 points and blocked four shots. Miller and Stevens shared the team lead with nine rebounds apiece and Mike Baker (Ogdensburg) handed out 11 assists.

Cortland led 7-2 to start the game, but Geneseo scored the next six points and Cortland did not lead again the rest of regulation. The Red Dragons stayed close, however, as the Knights’ lead was never more than eight points.

The Red Dragons pulled within two at 59-57 on Nagle’s three-point play with 1:16 left in regulation, but Stevens hit a layup with 38 seconds left to make it a two-possession game. An Oliver layup with 28 seconds cut the deficit to two and Geneseo missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 25 seconds remaining. Winter missed a jumper with six seconds left but Marshall grabbed the offensive rebound and hit the tying jumper from the left baseline with less than three seconds remaining to tie the game.

Cortland led 65-63 with 2:13 left in the first overtime after an Oliver layup, but Baker sank two free throws with 57 seconds left to tie the game. Following a Cortland miss, Geneseo had a chance to win the game but Simpson’s short jumper rolled around the rim and off with two seconds left. Cortland scored the first 11 points of the second overtime, eight by Winter, to help put the game away.

The Red Dragons shot 24-of-27 (89 percent) from the foul line, including 13-of-14 in the two overtimes. Geneseo, conversely, was only 3-of-10 from the charity stripe.
