Second-Half Run Allows Cortland to Beat Geneseo, 56-47

GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland went on a 13-0 run midway through the second half to erase a one-point deficit and the Red Dragons earned their 10th straight win with a 56-47 victory at Geneseo. Cortland improved to 15-3 overall and 10-1 in SUNYAC play. Geneseo, which defeated Cortland in December for the Red Dragons' lone league loss, is now 11-7 overall and 7-4 in the SUNYAC.

Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) led Cortland with 18 points and eight rebounds. She also recorded five steals and three assists. Sophomore Micki Volpini (Newfield) added 11 points and eight rebounds and junior Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) scored nine points.

Sophomore Mary Bruns (Brooklyn/Bishop Ford) finished with eight points and five rebounds and senior Miranda Lustig (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) contributed four assists and six rebounds.

Alyssa Polosky (Endicott/Union-Endicott) led the Knights with 17 points and dished out four assists. Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mt. Mercy) had 10 points and seven rebounds, Katelyn Charbonneau (Baldwin/C.W. Baker) scored 10 points and Bri Dunton (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) added seven assists, six points and five rebounds.

Cortland started the game quickly, leading by 11 points at 22-11 on a Jen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) three-pointer with 8:25 left in the first half. Geneseo came back with a 14-3 run to end the half, with Charbonneau and Polosky scoring six points each, and the teams were tied 25-25 at halftime.

Geneseo held its final lead at 36-35 after a Polosky three-point play with 10:06 remaining. Cortland answered with the next 13 points, including six by Volpini and five from Laing, and the Red Dragons led 48-36 with 5:12 left. The closest the hosts got after that was 54-47 on a Polosky three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining.

Cortland outscored Geneseo 17-3 on the foul line. The Red Dragons hit 17-of-19 free throws (90 percent), including a 6-for-6 effort by Laing and 5-for-5 accuracy by Patten.
