Cortland Skates to 2-2 Tie vs. Oswego

Sophomore Danielle Scharf's power-play goal gave Cortland a 1-0 lead
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Kelly Collins (Fairport/Taft Prep) scored with 42 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the Oswego women's ice hockey team into a 2-2 tie with Cortland Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The two teams, tied in the conference standings, meet again Sunday at 2 p.m.

Sophomore Danielle Scharf (Hopewell Junction/Berkshire School) and freshman Chelsey Wright (Medford/Suffolk PAL) each scored for Cortland (4-12-1 overall, 3-7-1 ECAC West). Sophomores Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) and Julia Fleming (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) and freshman Kellie Micillo (Sayville/Suffolk PAL) collected one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Sarah Sitcov (Arlington, VA/Wyoming Seminary) made 32 saves.

Senior Jenna Kirkwood (Chilliwack, BC/Warner Prep) also scored for the Lakers (5-11-1, 3-7-1). Senior Angie Friesen (Chilliwack, BC/Pacific Steelers), junior Emily Grippin (Ithaca/Syracuse Stars) and sophomore Jillian Bergeron (Brockville, ON/Nepean Wildcats) each recorded an assist. Junior goalie Emi Williams (Anchorage, AK/Anchorage Northstars) stopped 14 shots.

Scharf gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead at 12 minutes, 42 seconds of the opening period on the power play. Giamo sent a pass into the slot from the point that Fleming deflected to the left. Scharf skated in from the left point and wristed a shot over Williams for her fourth goal of the season. Wright then scored her seventh goal of the season at 2:06 of the second when she converted a partial breakaway off a pass from Micillo.

Early in the third period with the teams skating 4-on-4, Kirkwood notched her team-high ninth goal of the season with a wrist shot from the slot off a pass from Grippin to make it a 2-1 game. Each team later successfully killed off a power play to keep it a 2-1 score. Late in the game, after an Oswego timeout, the Lakers pulled Williams for an extra skater with a faceoff in Cortland's defensive zone. Bergeron won the draw back to Friesen, who passed over to Collins. Collins then sent a wrist shot into the upper left of the goal through traffic in front to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra session, Cortland carried much of the play but was unable to beat Williams for the game winner.
