SUNY Cortland has been selected to host the 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball New York Regional at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y., May 19-23.
The schools participating in the double-elimination regional will be announced on Monday, May 17. The regional champion will advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series May 28 – June 1 in Appleton, Wis.
“We're excited for the opportunity to host such a great event and look forward to running a first-rate championship along with the city of Auburn and the Auburn Doubledays,” said Cortland interim director of athletics Mike Urtz. “We've always enjoyed the atmosphere as participants when the event has been in Auburn previously. To now work hand-in-hand with the people in Auburn to deliver such a fantastic championship is truly an honor.”
The Auburn Doubledays are a Class A minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Six previous NCAA regionals have been held at the stadium, all since 2000. Ithaca College hosted those regionals, with Cortland serving as a co-host in 2005.
“The Doubledays are thrilled to have the NCAA tournament return to Falcon Park,” said team general manager Carl Gutelius. “The tournament is always exciting and we look forward to helping make the experience memorable for the players, their families and the fans of each school.”
Cortland has qualified for NCAA play each of the last 17 years, the longest active streak nationally in Division III. Five of the Red Dragons nine regional crowns occurred in Auburn (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008), along with one second-place finish (2006). Cortland will host the regional regardless of whether the Red Dragons qualify for the NCAA tournament this spring.
