RYE, N.Y. – Scott Hudson scored 36 seconds into overtime to give host Manhattanville College a 5-4 non-league victory over Cortland at the Playland Ice Casino. The Valiants won their sixth straight game and are 11-4 on the season. Cortland drops to 5-9 with its fourth one-goal loss of the season, including two in overtime.

Junior Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats) led the Red Dragons with a goal and two assists. Junior Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and senior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) each finished with a goal and an assist and sophomore Corey John (Albany/SUNY Plattsburgh), a transfer from Plattsburgh, scored once in his Cortland debut. Freshman Doug Danzi (Nesconset/New Jersey Rockets) made 26 saves.

Hudson and Mat Piegza paced Manhattanville with a goal and an assist apiece. Mickey Lang, Lem Randall and Brett Skalski scored one goal each and Pierre-Olivier Lemieux finished with 14 saves.

Manhattanville struck just 58 seconds into the game on a Lang unassisted goal, but Cortland scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Palmisano tallied his 10th goal of the season 5:16 into the first period, assisted by Porpora and Gold, and Porpora’s unassisted tally – his first goal of the season – 2:22 later gave the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead after one period.

John scored on a power play opportunity 4:01 into the second period to extend the lead to 3-1. Porpora and Palmisano recorded assists on the play.

The Valiants took advantage of a two-man advantage a few minutes later to tie the game. After Cortland penalties at the 6:06 and 7:16 marks, Piegza scored 7:24 into the period to draw Manhattanville within 3-2. With a one-man advantage still in place, Randall found the net at the 9:09 mark and the game was tied. Cortland went on a power play almost three minutes later, but Skalski netted an unassisted shorthanded goal and Manhattanville led 4-3 with 7:16 left in the second.

Cortland’s defense clamped down, however, and kept Manhattanville off the scoreboard the rest of the regulation. Gold scored his 10th goal of the year, tying him with Palmisano for the team lead, on an unassisted play with 9:41 left in regulation to knot the game at 4-4.

Hudson scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Piegza and Niklas Berntsson, on the only shot on goal by either team during the brief overtime period.

Cortland will play its second ECAC West foe in as many nights when it plays Utica College Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
