Red Dragons Fall to Hamilton on Late Goal

Sophomore Miaggie Giamo tied the game at 2-2 late in the third period with a short-handed goal
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Amy Allen's (Bright's Grove, ON/Loomis Chaffee) second goal of the game late in the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and the Hamilton women's hockey team held on for a 3-2 win versus Cortland Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons dropped to 3-8 with the setback, while the Continentals improved to 2-4-2. The two teams meet in Hamilton on Saturday night.

Sophomore Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) led Cortland with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Danielle Scharf (Hopewell Junction/Berkshire School) chipped in with a goal, and senior Nicole Ruddy (Utica/Mohawk Valley Herricanes) and sophomores Jen Whelan (Langhorne, PA/Neumann) and Julia Fleming (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) each contributed an assist. Sophomore goalie Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.) made 24 saves.

Junior Christie Sharlow (Potsdam/Brewster Academy) added a goal for the Continentals. Junior Stephanie Miguel (Maple, ON/St. Robert Catholic) recorded three assists, while senior Laura Stirrat (Wellesley, MAWellesley H.S.), junior Becky Cairns (Andover, MA/Andover H.S.) and freshman Katie Zimmerman (Plymouth, MI/Plymouth-Salem H.S.) registered one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Becca Hazlett (Grosse Pointe Park, MI/Taft School) turned aside 20 shots.

Sharlow gave Hamilton the lead with just 16 seconds remaining in the opening period when she scored right in front. Scharf tied the game at 11 minutes, 40 seconds of the second period with a hard wrist shot from the high slot. Allen notched her first of the game on the power play at 17:03 of the second when she sent a wrist shot into the upper right corner from the left circle.

Giamo knotted the game at 16:20 of the third period as she converted a 2-on-1 with Ruddy from the right face-off circle four seconds after Hamilton went on a power play. Allen, however, netted the game winner 15 seconds later on a loose puck in front. With 1:52 remaining, the Continentals took a penalty, and Cortland pulled Double with 53 seconds left. The Red Dragons kept the puck in Hamilton's defensive zone but were unable to score the equalizer.
