POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Oneonta, 3-2, and secure the SUNYAC Eastern Division title. The Red Dragons improve to 27-7 overall and finish 7-1 in league action. Cortland earns a bye into the semifinals of the six-team SUNYAC postseason tournament, which will be held Nov. 4-6 at West champion Fredonia.
Cortland lost the first two sets to Oneonta, 25-23 and 25-21, but came back to win the last three sets, 25-15, 25-14 and 15-9. Junior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led the team with 16 kills and added 15 digs and two aces. Junior
Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) finished with 12 kills and two blocks and freshman
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) had eight kills and two blocks.
Sophomore
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) totaled 38 assists, five kills and seven digs. Junior
Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had six kills and a team-high eight blocks, sophomore
Jenna Davies (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) finished with five kills and two blocks and sophomore
Erin Carrino (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) posted a team-high 17 digs.
Earlier on Saturday, Cortland swept Potsdam, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22, behind Coyle's 11 kills and 11 digs. Cooper finished with eight kills and three blocks, while Barrett and Davies had six kills apiece. Guercio amassed 29 assists and eight digs, Carrino recorded 10 digs and sophomore
Natalie Zacpal (Islip) chipped in with four kills.
Cortland, ranked fifth in the NCAA New York region, will wrap up the regular season on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30, with four matches at the Skidmore Invitational.
