FROSTBURG, MD. – Sarah Stephens and Sabrina Winterling combined for 30 kills as host and second-seeded Frostburg State defeated third-seeded Cortland in five sets in the second round of the NCAA Div. III tournament. Frostburg won by scores of 25-20, 13-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-10.
Junior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) recorded 22 kills and 24 digs for Cortland, which finishes the season with a 34-8 record. Coyle finished the season with a school single-season record 614 kills. Freshman
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) totaled a career-best 14 kills along with four blocks. Junior
Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) added 10 kills and sophomore
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished with 50 assists and 16 digs.
Cortland's 34 victories are its most since a 38-3 season in 2004. The Red Dragons tied for 17th place nationally in their 22nd NCAA tournament showing.
Stephens posted 17 kills and Winterling had 13 kills and five blocks for Frostburg (34-3). The Bobcats will host 2009 national runner-up Juniata College in the third round Sunday, with that winner advancing to the “elite eight” next week.
Cortland rallied from a 14-9 deficit in the first set to take a 15-14 lead. The Red Dragons led 19-17 after a Coyle kill, but Frostburg scored eight of the final nine points.
The Red Dragons dominated most of the second set, using a 7-1 run to turn a 4-4 tie into an 11-5 advantage. Cortland led by at least five points the rest of the way.
Cortland carried momentum into the first part of the third set. The Red Dragons led 20-13 after posting an 8-3 run. Frostburg, however, scored seven of the next eight points to close within 21-20. Cortland took a 22-20 lead on a
Jenna Davies (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) kills, but a Jamie Thomas kill and a combined block by Winterling and Kylie Carrington tied the set at 22-22. Trailing 23-22, Cortland tied the set on a Coyle kill, but kills by Winterling and Stephens gave Frostburg the victory.
Cortland rebounded to win the fourth set. The set was tied at 21-21 after a Stephens kill, but Cortland scored the last four points on a service error, an attack error and two Barrett kills.
Frostburg took command of the fifth set by scoring the first four points. The Bobcats' lead grew to 7-1 and was still at 12-7 before the Red Dragons mounted one final rally. A
Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) kill, a Frostburg error and a Coyle kill drew Cortland within 12-10. The hosts, however, closed out the match with the final three points, two on Winterling kills.
